If miss Supernatural and its characters and would welcome more seasons of the long-running fantasy series, especially after the cancelation of The Winchesters spinoff series. Interestingly, a Supernatural return has not been ruled out by its stars, and season 16 has even been teased quite recently.

While there are a few ways that the CW favorite could return, whether that be a reboot following a new cast to a season 16 following underrated Supernatural characters, it would be difficult for it to work without Sam and Dean themselves. Luckily, a recent interview with Jared Padalecki has teased a continuation of Sam and Dean’s stories in another season. Interestingly, if it does happen, this would mean that a Supernatural season 16 could be going head-to-head with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot that is currently in development, causing a clash between the two supernatural teen drama shows.

A Supernatural Return Was Teased For 2025 By Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki And Jensen Ackles Would Be Happy To Return

In an interview with CBR in 2024, Jared Padalecki teased Supernatural’s return, citing 2025 as the possible year to revisit the show. Both Padalecki and co-star Jensen Ackles have always been very open to the idea of returning as Supernatural’s Sam and Dean Winchester, despite no official plans being in place for a revival. However, the Sam Winchester actor goes one step further in explaining how Padalecki and Ackles have talked about how and when Supernatural could return following the show’s conclusion in 2020, saying they are “excited” to discuss the possibility. Check out Jared Padalecki’s full statement below:

The simple answer to your question is 100%. I will play Sam Winchester again. Jensen will play Dean Winchester again. It's more of a timing and availability thing. In hindsight, Jensen and I have always said "always," if we ever have the option. I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said "2025. In 2020, we're ending this. Let's get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to."

Jared Padalecki teasing a Supernatural season 16 revival for 2025 makes sense as there is still a lot of fan demand for content in that universe, even though The Winchesters spinoff was canceled. Of course, they have reservations about the idea, as Padalecki states, “With Jensen and I being so protective of the show and the characters, the story has to be absolutely right,” and it may be too soon to revisit. While a Supernatural season 16 revival has no official confirmation, it's interesting to think that if it did start development in 2025, it would have some exciting competition.

If Supernatural Season 16 Enters Development In 2025, It Could Release Near Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Revival

Filming Schedules Could Cause Supernatural & Buffy To Go Head-To-Head

Supernatural season 16 could clash with Buffy's reboot series if Jared Padalecki’s proposed idea is realized and enters development in 2025. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an iconic show itself and has been cited as an inspiration for Supernatural, being referenced multiple times during the show’s 15 seasons. However, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, just missing the release of Supernatural in 2005, so there was never a chance for the two shows to air at the same time. Yet if Supernatural made a comeback, it could finally air alongside Buffy thanks to the reboot.

Buffy led the way for many TV series to come, including Supernatural, so it is no surprise that Supernatural recalls Buffy in many moments.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot series was confirmed in early 2025 and is currently waiting to be greenlight. If Buffy returns on Hulu, as rumored, filming will finish before the show airs per streaming standards, as opposed to when Buffy filmed while airing on The WB and UPN. Consequently, the earliest we can expect Buffy’s reboot is 2026, although this is purely speculative. If Supernatural enters development in 2025 and continues airing on The CW, the absolute earliest we could expect a comeback is 2026. Therefore, the usual filming schedules mean that the two supernatural teen dramas could go head-to-head.

Considering both Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have prolific statuses as the best supernatural teen dramas of all time, a head-to-head would be brilliant. Both shows have a dedicated following, which even somewhat crosses over due to their similar tones and premises, so to see them air at the same time would be fantastic for both fandoms. Furthermore, engagement with the supernatural teen drama genre would increase dramatically as a result of the competition caused by Supernatural season 16 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot series airing at the same time, drawing in more audiences for both shows.

If Padalecki’s teased Supernatural season 16 ever comes to fruition, the pop culture phenomenon from Supernatural and Buffy’s reboots clashing would be historical

Due to Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer having thematic similarities, there has been a longtime fan desire to see a crossover between the two iconic shows. However, the shows airing on different TV networks, issues relating to incompatible lore (even with Supernatural’s multiverse offering a way out), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer ending before Supernatural even began mean a crossover is unlikely to happen. Nevertheless, we could be gearing up for a potential epic head-to-head because if Padalecki’s teased Supernatural season 16 ever comes to fruition, the pop culture phenomenon from Supernatural and Buffy’s reboots clashing would be historical.
