Supernatural season 15 is back, and the second half of the final season shows no slowing down when it comes to nods to the fandom - starting with "Galaxy Brain", and a reference to the show's (many) failed attempts at spinoffs. After 15 seasons, it's actually surprising that Supernatural has yet to have a spinoff, and it's not from lack of trying, something that the writers are having some fun with in God's monologue at the start of the newest episode.

"Galaxy Brain" begins with God (Rob Benedict) in a Radio Shed, an alternate universe Radio Shack (and a universe in which Hilary Clinton won the presidential election, as a radio spot in the background confirms). Chuck has managed to free himself from Sam (Jared Padalecki), but he's still feeling unsatisfied - and as everyone knows, when a good villain is upset, the only thing to do is begin a monologue. His speech does multiple things: gives fans an idea of how he is feeling, explains his obsession with Earth 1's Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles), and pokes fun at the show's failure to launch a spinoff series in this universe.

The reference itself is a small one, as God is talking about his history, how he came to create so many universes, and why his original one is so important to him. As the camera zooms in on his face, he announces "It's time to clear the board. All the other worlds, alternate realities, the sub-plots, the failed spinoffs. It's time to start canceling shows". Longtime Supernatural fans got a chuckle out of the line as well as Chuck's exhausted expression, as the character perfectly channeled the writers in that moment. Because at this point, there have been no fewer than two spinoffs attempted for the hit show, one web series, and undoubtedly other ideas discussed, but none of them have really managed to get off the ground.

Chuck watches his other worlds die in Supernatural

The first attempt was made back in 2010, when a ten-episode web series was actually created. Wayward Sisters. Again, a backdoor pilot failed to lead to a series order.

God referencing these shows (and the cancellation of a show - a clear nod to Supernatural itself ending) isn't just a funny line, though. The rest of the episode saw Jody Mills return, and with the Winchesters' help, she was able to rescue Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip) - a dreamwalker who was thought to be dead. This was a sweet (and surprising) moment, and one that will reunite Jody and her girls in the future... which may mean that this was also a farewell for the fan-favorite character. With fewer than 10 episodes left to go in Supernatural's final season, there may not be space to bring Sheriff Mills back again, and this could serve as a happy ending for her, Claire (Kathryn Newton), and Kaia. Of course, this isn't confirmed, and there may be more for Jody to do in the final season - either way, fans are looking forward to more of God acting as a surrogate for the writers and practically winking at the camera at the series wraps up.
