Summary

  • The CW should revive Supernatural with its canceled spinoff, Wayward Sisters, rather than continuing the Winchesters' story.
  • Wayward Sisters had potential as a spinoff, featuring popular characters from the original show and the opportunity for guest appearances.
  • Wayward Sisters would be a fresh and original addition to the Supernatural franchise, with an all-female cast and the chance to explore new storylines.

Supernatural returning for season 16 — though it would be better to continue its legacy with a canceled spinoff instead. The show premiered back in 2005, and over the course of its many seasons, Sam and Dean Winchester hunted demons and saved the world multiple times. The supernatural series has grown an impressive fan base, and there have been frequent conversations about how the show could continue beyond its finale in 2020.

After Supernatural ended with season 15, The CW tried to keep the franchise alive and continue to capitalize on it with The Winchesters, a prequel about Dean and Sam's parents, Mary and John Winchester. Jensen Ackles was involved in producing the prequel, which he also narrated and guest-starred in. However, the show didn't reach the same popularity as the original series, and new Supernatural project coming soon. With any luck, it won't be a direct continuation.

The CW Should Bring Back Supernatural's Canceled Spinoff Instead Of Season 16

There is a way to continue Supernatural without season 16: by bringing back its canceled spinoff, Wayward Sisters. The CW attempted to create spinoffs a couple of times during the original show's run. Wayward Sisters was the closest it got before The Winchesters. 2014's Bloodlines failed miserably, but Wayward Sisters had a lot of potential. First, it was supposed to feature Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Donna (Briana Buckmaster), Claire (Kathryn Newton), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen), Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), and Patience (Clark Backo) — all characters already popular from Supernatural. It also provided an opportunity for Supernatural characters to make cameos from time to time.

Supernatural season 13 attempted to set up this female-led spinoff with the backdoor episode "Wayward Sisters." However, The CW ed on picking the show up for a full season. Since the network has shown a clear interest in keeping Supernatural alive with The Winchesters and potential future projects, it should revisit the concept of Wayward Sisters rather than continue Supernatural. It's tied closely enough to the original show to interest viewers but still unique enough to feel fresh. Plus, it's been over three years since Supernatural's ending. This means the new stars won't have to compete with the chemistry of the original Supernatural cast or worry about the show's timeline.

All 15 seasons of Supernatural are streaming on Netflix.

Why Wayward Sisters Makes More Sense Than Continuing The Original Show

Supernatural season 16 would struggle to find its footing after the series finale, so, the fix Dean Winchester's controversial Supernatural ending, but it would fall into a rabbit hole of clichés and overdone tropes. Given that The Winchesters prequel already failed, it might be a good idea for the franchise to try something new. Wayward Sisters could be what it needs.

Dean and Sam Winchester already told their stories, but Donna and Jody Mills haven't. They have appeared several times on the show, working with the brothers on different cases. They've already proven they have amazing chemistry, alongside all the other Supernatural characters with lots of potential. On top of that, Supernatural had an almost all-male cast, and it would be great to try a new formula focused on the show's women. Wayward Sisters is the easiest and most logical step toward that.
