Summary

  • Jesse Turner's return as the Antichrist could kickstart a possible Supernatural season 16, satisfying fans by addressing unresolved storylines.
  • Supernatural's stakes problem could be solved if the Winchesters take on Jesse, a powerful foe free from Chuck's story.
  • Jesse's storyline as a powerful being who could destroy Heaven remains one of the biggest unresolved plots in Supernatural.

One particular unresolved Supernatural cast, allowing stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki to become legacies in the genre. However, the American series ended its run in 2020 after 15 seasons, much to the disappointment of its dedicated fandom, who wish the series had a 16th season.

In 2022, a Supernatural prequel series that Jensen Ackles executive produced, titled The Winchesters, was released. However, despite satisfactory ratings, the series was canceled after only one season due to the WGA strike alongside the CW’s network shift. Fans were once again disappointed and campaigned to save the show, but unfortunately failed. Therefore, it is obvious that there is an audience for a possible season 16, and with an astonishing 327 episodes, it is no surprise that Supernatural has a few unresolved plotlines. Therefore, an unresolved story could be the perfect starting point for the continuation of the beloved show.

Jesse's Return As The Antichrist Would Be A Perfect Story For Supernatural Season 16

The Children Are The Future

Jesse Turner stares at someone in Supernatural

One possible Supernatural storyline that would be perfect for season 16 involves Jesse Turner’s return as the Antichrist. In season 3, episode 6, “I Believe the Children Are Our Future,” Sam and Dean investigate murders resembling urban legends and fairytales, finding the cause to be 11-year-old Jesse Turner. Jesse’s mother is revealed to have become pregnant while being possessed by a demon, resulting in the conception of Jesse, a half-human/half-demon child (or Cambion). Castiel informs the brothers that Jesse has the power to destroy Heaven and must be killed, at which point it is implied that Jesse flees to Australia.

Jesse’s return would make a lot of sense for a possible season 16 plot because the audience would already be familiar with his origins. Rather than creating a new threat for Sam and Dean, they would be revisited by a past character that people have a lot of hope of seeing return. Furthermore, some Supernatural fans hated the show's ending as they felt that it didn’t meet certain expectations, most likely due to season 15 rewrites as a result of COVID-19 limitations. Therefore, a season revitalizing an unresolved story poses another chance to give the audience a satisfying ending.

Jesse Is One Of The Biggest Unresolved Storylines After Supernatural's Ending

Jesse Poses A Serious Threat

Although there have been many abandoned storylines throughout Supernatural’s 15-year run, Jesse’s is arguably one of the biggest. Season 9’s “Bloodlines” backdoor pilot introducing mob-like monster families in Chicago could have been a large-scale spinoff, but it was ill-received by fans, whereas season 13’s “Wayward Sisters” gained an enthusiastic response, yet still failed due to a lack of series ideas. Both are now unresolved Supernatural storylines. Some abandoned storylines could have helped the show, such as Sam using his demon powers in the fight against God in season 15. These unresolved stories could have been added but weren’t, despite fan interest.

Jack Kline is a Nephilim (half-human and half-angel), which means he is the opposite of Jesse Turner, who is a Cambion (half-human and half-demon).

However, Jesse’s story is possibly the biggest to leave unresolved because Jesse was a being apparently powerful enough to destroy Heaven. Jesse’s powers rivaled Archangels by warping reality, commanding demons, using telekinesis, and teleporting with one thought. Therefore, it is a mystery why Supernatural abandoned his story, especially as they hinted at it more than once, with Sam being mistaken for the Antichrist by Gordon Walker in season 3. Jack Kline’s introduction in season 12 only adds to the mystery of Supernatural despite being a high-stakes character, as the two completely juxtapose each other.

The Winchesters Taking On Jesse Would Solve Supernatural Season 16's Stakes Problem

It Just Keeps Getting Bigger

Supernatural Sam Dean Chuck God

If the Winchester brothers take on Jesse as the Antichrist in season 16, it would solve Supernatural’s stakes problem. Since season one, Sam and Dean have defeated numerous types of creatures, from simple salt-and-burn ghosts to pesky demons from Hell, and, eventually, even gods. Increasing the stakes every season is what kept Supernatural exciting, as there was always a build-up to a “big bad” which was confronted at the end of each season, and it only got bigger. However, following the defeat of God in Supernatural's final season, trying to top that in the next one would be a challenge.

Jesse is free to do what he wants now he’s not part of Chuck’s story, including turning evil.

As the extremely powerful Antichrist, Jesse would make the perfect choice for Supernatural's season 16 villain. Since Chuck’s death, Jack has taken over as a hands-off God, giving the people free will that Chuck didn’t. Therefore, Jesse is free to do what he wants now he’s not part of Chuck’s story, including turning evil. After all, Jesse is destined to Lucifer in destroying Heaven. Although Lucifer was killed by an Archangel blade in season 15, he has been killed this way before, which sent him to the Empty. If Lucifer returned once, he could return again, fulfilling the prophecy.

Season 16 would enable Supernatural to create a satisfying conclusion, changing season 15’s ending, which had mixed reviews. As the main antagonist, Jesse could hate the Angels for upending his life and trying to kill him in season 3, motivating him to free Lucifer from the Empty, who dislikes the Winchesters (and possibly Jack) for raising Lucifer’s son to be good. Furthermore, the Antichrist’s return would challenge Jack’s decision to be hands-off, adding the burden of being God to the conflict. Should they decide to make a Supernatural season 16, Jesse Turner’s return would make sense, concluding his unresolved storyline.
