What's next for Dean Winchester embarked on one final hunt in Supernatural's closing episode, "Carry On." In last week's penultimate installment, Supernatural took care of the narrative housekeeping. God was defeated by a jacked-up Jack, the world was restored, and the Winchesters were finally set free after decades under the influence of Chuck's mighty pen. There was even time to kill a couple of archangels. This allowed Supernatural's true finale to focus on the heart of the show - the Winchester brothers themselves.

Named after Supernatural's adopted rock anthem, "Carry On" delivers an emotionally-charged finale for one of TV's most beloved sibling duos. The past is honored in nostalgic style, and the book of the Winchesters closes on a touching last chapter. Many viewers (after they've finished crying through every Kleenex within a 5-mile radius) will now be wondering what comes next for Supernatural. Here's what we know so far. When future generations binge Supernatural on their streaming platform of choice, they'll be disappointed to find no "Next Episode" button pops up after the season 15 finale. Despite the impressive longevity of the Winchester brothersSupernatural inevitably suffered a decline in of viewership, critical reception and creativity. After Supernatural's final run was penciled in, producers and cast described the show as having come to a natural end, and most fans would perhaps agree with these sentiments, albeit reluctantly.

The Status Of Supernatural's Spin-Offs

supernatural wayward sisters season 11

If Supernatural season 16 isn't happening, what about a spin-off">Bloodlines failed miserably and the backdoor pilot is widely considered the worst episode in Supernatural's long history. Fans were much higher on the Wayward Sisters idea and a season 13 pilot starring the familiar trio of Jody Mills, Donna Hanscum and Claire Novak was received with far more enthusiasm. Nevertheless, The CW turned down the option of a full series, with the network's president suggesting that Supernatural simply didn't work without the starring duo of Sam and Dean.

Supernatural's ending does make a "third time lucky" spin-off attempt more likely. Perhaps there will be more appetite for a second show without the parent series casting a shadow. The CW has enjoyed success spinning-off their other popular franchises, and the conclusion of Supernatural might tempt them to revisit the Wayward Sisters, or focus on a new generation of hunters. Supernatural's finale introduced Sam Winchester's son, who grows up to be a hunter in his own right - there could be mileage in a Winchester Jr. series. With that said, The CW seem to believe that Supernatural isn't viable without the Winchester brothers, and so long as that philosophy remains, there will be no spin-off.

How Supernatural's Story Can Continue

Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean in Supernatural

At this stage, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are leaving the door open for a Supernatural continuation - a wise career move indeed. A decade down the line, rumors of a Supernatural revival or one-off special might emerge, but the reality would entirely depend on how Ackles and Padalecki fare in their post-Winchester roles. If either actor launches into Hollywood stardom or lands a juicy starring role on a hot Netflix original, a Supernatural return of any kind begins to look unlikely. If both boys are available, and the interest is there, however, a Supernatural continuation can't be ruled out.

Fortunately, Supernatural is the kind of show where revivals and resurrections are always on the menu. A character can be eviscerated on the spot by a divine entity and still turn up in the next episode unscathed, and fans no longer blink an eye at those shenanigans. There are any number of ways for the Winchester brothers to come back in the future, and any number of reasons for them to do so. The easiest option would be to have Jack temporarily resurrect Dean to help his brother and nephew defeat a particularly tricky villain.
