The CW's flagship fantasy-horror show Supernatural will draw to a close when the series finale airs on November 19, 2020. The beloved series has spanned 15 seasons and 327 episodes from 2005 to 2020, ranking as one of the longest-running shows in recent history.
As brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) face their last few thrills and chills in the final episodes to come, it's time to consider how some of the main characters might fare in a crossover project. Enter Avatar: The Last Airbender, an equally beloved TV series that also premiered in 2005. Avatars have the ability to bend the four planetary elements: earth, air, fire, and water. How would the main characters of Supernatural express their Airbender skills?
Rowena MacLeod - Fire/Water
As one of the show's most powerful witches who undergoes a personal evolution, Rowena MacLeod (Ruth Connell) starts as a figure who might Bend Fire but later reduces her fiery temper to be a far calmer entity that would likely be a Waterbender.
As Crowley's mother, Rowena spends much of Season 10 and 11 doing favors for Lucifer, who repays her by killing her twice, the second time by burning her body. As such, Rowena would most certainly Bend Fire. However, as her character adapts later in the series, especially in the way she helps Jack heal from his fall from grace. Her equable demeanor also resembles a tranquil body of water.
Mary Winchester - Earth
Akin to Mother Earth, Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) is Sam and Dean's mom. Her death at the hands of demon Azazel forced her husband John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) into a life of monster hunting.
However, Mary hated hunting and feared demonic entities. She'd rather nurture her sons and remain grounded. Therefore, she'd most likely be an Earthbender. Mary would concern herself with protecting her family on the ground. Even after being betrayed by The British Men of Letters, Mary protests their corruption and immediately returns home to be with her family. She's stable and dependable.
Jack Kline -Air
Although Jack Kline (Alexander Calvert) is the son of Lucifer, he happens to be an angel-human hybrid. Jack is also young, freewheeling, and unpredictable as the wind, and would most probably be an Airbender if he had the Avatar skills.
Like many Airbenders, Jack desires to be free and is reluctant to fight unless absolutely necessary. Jack also feels immensely guilty and remorseful after accidentally killing a person, traits typically found in pacifistic Airbenders. Jack's Airbending status can be summed by the statement he makes in Season 6, "every time I try and do something good, people get hurt."
Lucifer - Fire
Since he descends from the fiery pits of hell, it should come as no surprise that Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) would most likely act as a Firebender in the Avatar canon. He is not only the most powerful villain Sam and Dean face throughout the series, but he's also a paragon of pure evil.
Firebenders are the most aggressive of all, retaining a consistent power source that allows them to strike with vicious precision. Lucifer is an evil entity that proves to be the bane of Sam and Dean's existence throughout the series, constantly drawing on his hellish source of dark energy for eternal dominion.
Crowley - Fire
Dubbed the King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) is arguably the second most powerful demon in the entire Supernatural series behind only Lucifer. As such, it'd be hard to imagine him as anything other than a hateful Firebender.
Also known as King of the Crossroads, The New Devil, and King of the Dirtbags (among others), Crowley spends much of his time in the flame-licked hellscapes along with his sinister superior, Lucifer. Crowley does not care about anything other than his own safety and is willing to sacrifice whatever necessary to ensure his survival.
Bobby Singer - Earth
As one of the strongest and most good-natured characters on the show, able to mount an equally effective offensive and defensive stands, Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) would most certainly serve as a top-tier Earthbender.
As Sam and Dean's de facto father figure, Bobby has a certain level of sympathy most characters in the show do not. He also wears camouflage clothing, which easily blends him into the natural state of the Earth. Never too high or too low, Bobby is a grounded and stabilized character full of heartfelt substance.
Castiel - Air
As the third most tenured character on the show, Castiel (Misha Collins) had plenty of time to exhibit his characteristics consistent with that of an Airbender. It's not so much that he hails from the Heavens as a fallen angel, but he also uses his supernatural flexibility to deliver Dean from Hell.
Castiel was also able to fly in the earlier seasons before Lucifer had his wings clipped at one point. One of Airbender's strongest assets is their spiritual projection, which Castiel certainly has in spades as an angelic being. Cas' ethereal dynamism allows him to flow freely between Heaven and the earthly realm.
Sam Winchester - Water
Since Sam Winchester adapted and evolved more than any other main character on the show, he'd likely use change as the primary element as a Waterbender. Sam reluctantly accepted his fate as the son of an infamous demon hunter, yet slowly comes around to help his brother Dean deliver the world from evil.
As the Beta to Dean's Alpha, Sam is also less domineering and prone to using his enemies' strength against them rather than defeat them through violence. Sam has a temperamental versatility his hardheaded brother does not.
Dean Winchester - Fire
Speaking of Dean Winchester, he'd almost certainly use his alpha-male dominance and ultra-aggressive nature to become a Firebender in the Avatar universe.
Dean is mischievous, smart-mouthed, and most importantly, simple and direct. He is the opposite of his brother Sam's ever-adapting nature. Dean's nature and personality remain fixed throughout the series, rarely wavering from his true self. He also happens to be one of the most formidable demon hunters on the globe, making his powerful skills akin to that of a Firebending warrior.
