America Ferrera didn’t expect to return as Amy in the sitcom Superstore so soon. Superstore debuted on NBC in 2015 and featured Ferrera in the starring role of Amy Sosa, a single mother working her way up the ladder of the Cloud 9 superstore.
Created by Justine Spitzer, Superstore follows a team of oddball employees who are workers at Cloud 9 store 1217, a discount warehouse store in St. Louis, Missouri. During its formidable run, Superstore has garnered praise for doling out hilarious moments while tackling topical issues. Last year, Ferrera announced that she would exit the series at the end of season 5. However, Ferrera’s exit was postponed due to production delays and the sitcom’s landmark 100th episode served as her curtain call. Shortly after Ferrera’s departure, NBC canceled Superstore, leaving the series to wrap up at the end of its current sixth season. Recently, Superstore surprised and delighted fans when it was revealed that Ferrera would return as Amy for the series finale.
Per Variety, Ferrera reveals that she didn’t expect to return as Amy in Superstore so soon after her departure. Slated to air back-to-back episodes tonight, Thursday, March 25, Superstore will kick off the final installment with its penultimate episode titled “Perfect Store.” Speaking on her return, Ferrera stated, “I expected and hoped that the show would go on after my departure for many, many years. So it was definitely coming back sooner than I think any of us imagined.” Titled "All Sales Final," the final Superstore episode is expected to close out all the current storylines of the essential workers of Cloud 9.
Of course, Superstore always left the door open for Ferrera to return. Revealing that Amy gracing the halls of Cloud 9 again will feel organic to fans of the series, Ferrera explained, “We set it up that Amy was going to work at corporate knowing that there was always an opportunity for her to play a role at the end of the show.” While it remains to be seen exactly how Amy will factor into the Superstore signoff, her appearance will provide closure for her former Cloud 9 coworkers, as well as fans. Indeed, Ferrera’s return could offer a satisfying ending to the romance storyline between Amy and Jonah (Ben Feldman), which ended when Amy took the Cloud 9 corporate job.
Superstore became a staple comedy sitcom at NBC and offered a slew of realistic characters and workplace situations for viewers to relate to while showcasing its stellar cast’s comedic chops. Of course, Ferrera has been regarded as the anchor of Superstore, both on and off-screen, and helped to bring true stories of the American workforce to life during her time on the series. Ferrera returning as Amy once more offers a proper salute to Superstore when the employees of Cloud 9 clock out for the last time.
