There's a large cast of characters in working at Cloud 9 in the pilot, he had just dropped out of business school, and, needing a change, applied for a job at a big-box store he was ing by on his way home.
Jonah is selfless, kind-hearted, and he's known for doing what's right even when it's hard. However, he's also far too easy for the other characters to make fun of due to his privileged upbringing and his chaotic personality. Jonah always ends up with his foot in his mouth and delivers some of the best lines in the series.
"I Never Yell. Even When I'm Mad. I Just Push It Down Really Deep And Then Sometimes I Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night Panicked And Sweaty For No Reason."
Jonah has never been one for confrontation. In fact, he will do whatever he can to avoid it. The few times Jonah has lost his temper were shocking because of how unusual it is for him. When Amy asks him to yell at her daughter so she doesn't have to be the bad guy, Jonah tells her that yelling isn't something he ever does. Instead, he represses everything and wakes up in the middle of the night with too many feelings. It's especially funny because it's relatable.
"I Still Have A Lot Of TV To Get Through. We're In A Golden Age Of Television!"
Jonah speaks for everyone when he says he has a lot of television to get through. There are so many incredible series on the air right now, that it's impossible to keep up with all of them. The watch list just seems to grow no matter how many shows are checked off. Mateo gives Jonah a tough time for not being as good of an actor as the cast of of Endearment and Jonah argues that there's too much out there to watch.
"I'm Doing This New Curbside Thing. It's Kinda Like An Elite Squad."
Amy's brother, Eric, comes to town and stays with Amy and Jonah, and Jonah will do just about anything to impress him. He makes plans for them to hang out and tries to make Eric think he's a lot cooler than he is.
On the day that Cloud 9 launches its new curbside pickup service, Jonah is assigned as one of the runners. Jonah tells Eric, in all seriousness, that the curbside pick-up team is like an elite squad.
"You Said I Could Say 'Curated' Once A Week. I Chose Now As My Time."
Garrett's favorite past-time is making fun of Jonah. When they become roommates, Garrett gives Jonah a list of conditions. He acts annoyed at almost everything Jonah says, and in Garrett's defense, Jonah does have a tendency to be pretentious. However, it just adds to the humor of the show. Garrett forbids Jonah from using the word "curated" more than once a week, and when the situation demands it, Jonah decides to use his .
"We'll See An Occasional Movie And Then Sometimes I'm There When She Gives Birth To A Baby."
After a live stream of Jonah and Amy having sex was broadcast to all the Cloud 9's in the world, they told the employees that they weren't starting a relationship. However, Jonah and Amy are carrying on a secret romance under their co-worker's noses. Because of all the complications, Amy is afraid of putting a label on their relationship. When Amy gives birth to Adam's baby, Jonah stays with her at the hospital to help her through it. It's clear from his sarcastic comments that Jonah wishes they would call things official.
"He Said, 'Excuse Me,' You Know? So It Was More Of, Like, A Reflex."
Jonah is not the type of person who will face off against a criminal during a robbery. Jonah comes into work and finds a burglar stealing from the safe and Jonah yells at him to stop. He even pretends to have a weapon by waving his hand around in his jacket pocket.
They end up in a relatively civil conversation, and the robber politely tells Jonah that he's not going to put the money back. Jonah's standing in the doorframe and all it takes is an "excuse me" for Jonah to move out of his way. When Dina questions him about it, Jonah argues that it was a reflex.
"I Feel Like Technology Is Solving Problems We Don't Even Have."
Jonah and Amy take Glenn's tickets to the manager's conference and have a great time letting loose. They're giving away so many free items, that Superstore put together a montage of the couple collecting bags full of free things. Amy and Jonah try some virtual reality glasses that transport them to Cloud 9. Amy comments on how it looks like they really are in a grocery store and Jonah was right when he said technology was solving problems no one had. Not many people run into a situation where they need to imagine themselves in a supermarket.
"You're A*s Is Grass, And I'm The Lawn Mower."
When Emma gets a job at Cloud 9, she ends up slacking on the clock. Amy's afraid to yell at her daughter because she doesn't want Emma to like Adam more than she likes her. However, Emma isn't doing her job properly, and someone needs to correct her. There's nothing Jonah won't do for Amy, and at her persistence, Jonah yells at Emma for her. His insults are hilarious, but Glenn overhears Jonah setting Emma straight, and Jonah ends up being the one who gets in trouble.
"Hey, I Played Basketball When I Was A Kid Until My Parents Let Me Stop."
Jonah doesn't seem like the type of person who would be into sports, so when he and Garrett play around at work, Garret is surprised that Jonah isn't bad at making shots. As it turns out, Jonah did play basketball when he was in school. This came as a huge shock, but when Jonah itted that his parents forced him into it everything fell into place. Jonah does confess to being a golfer, and out of all the sports he could play, that makes the most sense.
"I'm Not, Like, Against Weapons As A Whole. I Fenced In College."
Superstore never shies away from tackling real-world issues, and things get controversial when Jonah gets assigned to the gun counter. Jonah is against buying, owning, and selling guns and asks if he can work at another station. He gets a lot of heat from the employees for his viewpoint, and he protests by saying he's not against all weapons. Jonah uses his fencing experience as proof, and Garrett adds it to his list of "crazy white people things" that Jonah says.
