CBS finally canceled S.W.A.T. for the final time in March 2025.
However, the show may not be fully dead just yet, as Ilonzeh revealed in an interview with ScreenRant that she is hopeful S.W.A.T. could make a shock return. She stated that there is a petition to save that show that has reached 80k signatures, and that she had spoken with an executive producer, who suggested the show might not be fully done just yet. She also suggested that the series could wind up resurrected on another platform. Check out Ilonzeh's full comments below:
Annie Ilonzeh: We have our petition at change.org to still save the show, and we've got 80,000 signatures on it, and they've resurrected themselves two times before already, so third time's a charm. But another little bit of tea is I spoke to one of the executive producers, and he's like, "No, we're not flatlined completely yet."
So, although CBS has canceled us, and that is for sure the deal, there is a world where a particular streamer is interested, and it really could resurrect. I just saw [this EP] and he was like, "It's not over yet." Of all the people, this particular executive producer is the one who would know. He is the one who knows. I was like, "What are we doing?" He's like, "We're still in it."
What This Means For The Future Of S.W.A.T.
If The Show Does Rise From The Ashes For A Third Time Streaming Seems The Route
Ilonzeh's comments should bring a degree of hope to fans of the show, and, while it feels unlikely S.W.A.T. would be uncanceled for a third time, her comments suggest there is a small chance this will happen. Of course, there will be a lot of things that have to happen in order for this to come to fruition, and much will depend on the way S.W.A.T. season 8 ends. The show will need to wrap up the season (and the show) in a conclusive way, whilst also leaving enough by way of narrative in place in case the show receives a shock renewal.
The S.W.A.T. series finale double episode will air on CBS on May 16.
If S.W.A.T. does live to fight another day, it seems likely that it would be via streaming, rather than CBS reversing its decision again. This is uncommon, but not unheard of, and a good example of this happening is the recent Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 renewal on Peacock. Something like this should not be entirely ruled out for S.W.A.T. at this stage, and there will need to be plenty of discussions in place before this can happen.
Our Take On The Chances of S.W.A.T. Season 9
Whilst It Shouldn't Be Completely Ruled Out A Revival Seems Unlikely
S.W.A.T. is a show that has had a strong run across eight seasons, and CBS clearly had a change of heart when canceling the series twice before. But, for the network to end the show for a third time seems pretty definitive, and it's like season 8 will seek to wrap up the show as though this is the end. There's an outside chance that the series will receive another stay of execution, but with ratings dipping lower than expected for season 8, any kind of reprieve for S.W.A.T. feels unlikely at this point.
