Ella Purnell's excellent performance as Lucy MacLean in Fallout made her one of 2024's biggest stars, but her latest role is a massive surprise.

What To Expect From Ella Purnell's Sweetpea

& How It Compares To Her Role In Fallout

In Sweetpea, which is coming to Starz later this year, Purnell plays a character coping with multiple issues, such as being overlooked at her job, a non-committal boyfriend, and caring for her sick father. One day, Rhiannon reaches a breaking point and loses control. Once a quiet and reserved wallflower, Rhiannon unexpectedly develops a vengeful and exhilarating ion for murder. The once-timid woman disappears, replaced by someone capable of anything. As she embraces her newfound power, she struggles to keep her murderous secret hidden.

Purnell has a history with Starz, having starred in the cable network's restaurant drama, Sweetbitter, which was canceled in 2019 after two seasons. With Purnell once again starring in a lead role as Rhiannon, Sweetpea's ing cast includes Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), Nicôle Lecky (Sense8), Jon Pointing (Starstruck), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso) and Dustin Demri-Burns (Slow Horses). Sweetpea is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by C.J. Skuse and was adapted to the screen by Kirstie Swain (Run).

Sweetpea will be Purnell's first show since her big breakout in Prime Video's Fallout, and the two roles actually share some similarities. In Fallout, Lucy is an upbeat and optimistic Vault-Dweller who is hardened and driven to violence by the harsh realities of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. In Sweetpea, on the other hand, Purnell's Rhiannon is a quiet and reserved wallflower who is driven to murder by the struggles of everyday life, such as her job, boyfriend, and family life. Described as a dark comedy, Sweetpea should provide Purnell another opportunity to continue showcasing her darker side.

Sweetpea will air on Starz in the U.S. and on Sky Atlantic in the U.K later this year.
