Microids has announced that a remaster of the classic adventure title Syberia is in the works for a late 2025 release. The classic 2002 title, written and designed by Benoît Sokal, is an atmospheric game known for its narrative-driven storytelling and gorgeous hand-drawn visuals. The tale follows high-powered New York lawyer Kate Walker, who's sent to the fictional little European town of Valadilène to oversee a factory takeover on behalf of her firm. Before she can do so, Kate becomes tangled in the mystery of the factory's owner, and gets whisked away on an adventure of a lifetime.

While the original game was already strikingly beautiful, Syberia Remastered is recreating the entire game's visuals and mechanics to bring it to a modern audience in higher resolution and detail. A new teaser trailer shows the protagonist making her journey through the fictional remote areas of Russia and Europe, with drastically improved visuals. The remaster will be accompanied by the release of the game in VR for the Meta Quest 3, allowing players to literally step into the world of Syberia for a more immersive experience than ever.

According to a press release revealing the project, Syberia Remastered will undergo a "complete graphical overhaul" to bring the game's characters and environments to life through modern gaming tech. Microids founder Elliot Grassiano assures fans that the remaster will be "respectful of Benoît Sokal's legacy" while also allowing "a new generation to rediscover this adventure."

The press release about the remaster hints that the rest of the Syberia series will follow after the first game's release. According to the release, Syberia Remastered is a "key step in the rebirth of Sokal's unique universe of visual poetry, spellbinding storytelling and dreamlike exploration." The title is just one of the many classic older games getting a remaster for new and existing fans this year, including remasters of the iconic skateboarding titles from the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Syberia Remastered Looks Incredibly Promising

Hopefully, It Will Fix Some Of The Original Game's Issues

Train emerging from the glass train station in syberia remaster

I'm a huge fan of Syberia and am personally looking forward to following Kate's journey of self-discovery once again. This won't be Microid's first remaster; the studio recently remade another Sokal title from 1999, L'Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy. The remake received positive reviews, so following up with Syberia makes a lot of sense.

Based on the screenshots and gorgeous teaser trailer, the remake will make this beautiful game even more breathtaking with crisp backgrounds and character models. I only hope that the remake upgrades Kate's ability to walk up and down stairs, which was a painstakingly slow process in the original.

A concrete release date hasn't been revealed yet for the Syberia Remastered and its accompanying VR edition. However, the game is available to wishlist on Steam and the PlayStation Store now.
