WHERE TO WATCH

  • I literally don't care about war movies. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just not my cup of tea, but this movie is incredible for what it accomplishes in the film world alone. The whole film is meant to appear as one continuous shot and is specifically filmed and edited in a way that it accomplishes that. For a movie that just centers around the journey of two men to deliver a message, this decision for filming made a mediocre idea truly incredible to watch. This film is one that should be studied in classrooms.

  • This adds on to the list of “films that were actually done in one take but were cut to look like it but that then becomes their sole marketing tactic and will forever annoy me for this reason,” category. That said, 1917 is still an impressive film overall, though the plot does have some annoyingly unbelievable moments.

  • An ambitious film by Sam Mendes, who I assume was able to round up such a great ing cast because the filming style meant they only needed to show up for one day of work. The two lead actors bear the brunt of this movie, and they carry it proudly.

1917 Review: Sam Mendes' WWI Epic is a Better Thriller Than Drama
7/10

1917 is well-acted and an undeniable technical achievement, yet its real-time storytelling is both the film's greatest strength and biggest problem.
