A movie adaptation of Garrard Conley's memoir, the film revolves around the the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed as gay at the age of 19 and pressured into attending a gay conversion therapy program - or else be shunned by his family, friends, and church. Focus Features won the rights to the project in June 2017, before principal photography began in Atlanta, Georgia the following September. The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of its theatrical release.
