  • Pixar spent so much time learning to spectacularly animate curly hair for this film that they forgot to have a solid plot. It's okay, the characters are cute, and the story about learning to sympathize and deal with one's mother is one that hits a wide swath of the audience. But for a studio that prides themselves on plucking heartstrings, it's very empty.

  • Merida is perhaps the most independent and courageous of the Disney princesses, willing to go off on her own and forge her own identity despite the criticism of everyone around her. The CGI animation is beautiful and although this isn't my favorite Pixar film, it is still a good one.

  • The memes have aged better than Brave as. It is cool to set it in this kind of folkloric environment, and the visual style is great, but it is ultimately a more forgettable Pixar film.

Synopsis

Pixar's Brave follows Princess Merida of DunBroch (Kelly MacDonald), the daughter of a clan chief in medieval Scotland. When Meridia is told she must marry the suitor of her parents' choosing, she refuses, defying an age-old tradition and causing chaos in the kingdom. This starts a chain of events that causes Merida's mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), to fall victim to a magical curse, the princess sets off into the wild to rescue her.

Even though Brave is solid from beginning to end, the experience might be a little underwhelming for older viewers who expect Pixar to continue pushing the boundaries of animated film storytelling.
