  • Visually stunning to say the least. Luca Guadagnino's masterclass on creating atmosphere in a film that equally feels realistic and romanticized, while also inspiring deeply honest portraits of its vulnerable protagonists. The film's greatest achievement is arguably how it evokes feelings of nostalgia and summertime memories for the viewer as a byproduct of teh viewing experience. It really takes you to that setting and makes you want to stay there, sometimes regardless of the plot or what else is happening on screen. The pace is superb and the love story is tragic, but never over the top to the point of needless melodrama.

It feels truly coming-of-age despite having mature themes, which in a way makes it even more successful of a coming-of-age story than others of its time, such as Lady Bird and the Edge of Seventeen, which still feel told from the point of view of the teenage protagonist and not from the older perspective of the protagonist recalling a memory (which is how the book is written). Deeply nostalgic and simply beautiful film.

  • I do wish Guadagnino had just made Elio 18. While the age gap is important to the story, Elio being underage just cause more friction than the film needed to have. Which is a shame given how fantastic the film is, truly one of the best portrays of sensuality.

  • Have mixed feelings on this one. It is gorgeous throughout and the acting from the entire cast is fantastic. Just can't get behind the story much for this one. The power imbalance rubs my the wrong way honestly, and it's hard to separate Hammer from the character. Has one of my favorite quotes though.
