WHERE TO WATCH

  • A significantly more mean-spirited revisit of the original movie, this time wasting time by explaining WHY there's a time loop. Jessica Rothe's Tree Gelbman remains likable, but the movie squanders its potential by trying to outdo the original in all the wrong ways.

  • Happy Death Day 2U is an interesting concept, following a girl who is stuck in an endless loop of dying over and over again until she discovers the true identity of her killer. The suspenseful tone of the film makes it impossible to look away and holds the viewer's attention throughout the run time of the movie.

  • The Happy Death Day movies are incredibly entertaining and campy. They seemingly take inspiration from the Back to the Future movies in that each movie is a slightly different genre. Happy Death Day 2U beautifully continues the story of Tree, who is trapped in the time loop. The plot leans into the sci-fi elements instead of horror, but it's just as great as the original. I can't wait for the third movie to see what happens next!

  • Happy Death Day was a really great slasher comedy, and a sequel seemed incomprehensible. However, they did it, did it well, and made it in a way that makes sense. It's not better than the first movie, but it stands up alongside it, as equals.

Synopsis

Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to the sci-fi comedy/slasher film released in 2017, with Jessica Rothe returning to star as protagonist Tree Gelbman. Having believed she had escaped her hellish groundhog day of dying repeatedly, Tree wakes up to find herself stuck in yet another loop - with her friend being the target this time. Working together with her friends, the group learns that a high-school project is the cause of the chaos, but elements of the new reality prove to be tempting for Tree to keep things the way they are.

Happy Death Day 2U adds a genre twist to the series' formula, delivering a sequel that's funnier, sillier, and more entertaining than the first movie.
