  • This movie comes so close to crossing the line, but it never does which is what makes it so enjoyable to watch. The comedy doesn't distract you from the topic at hand, but is rather used as a way to emphasize how messed up these historical events were. Jojo Rabbit nails satire which not a lot of self-proclaimed satires can say.

  • A powerful study on the trappings of fascism that carefully tiptoes between comedy and sensetive explorations. Waititi handles this subject delicately and knows when to hit the right emotional beats, be they poking fun at the absurd practices of fascist, or the tragedy brought about for all involved. It would be a movie so easy to mess up and make something that is in poor taste, but Waititi thankfully handles its subject matter with the utmost care.

  • Jojo Rabbit takes a dark and depressing subject and adds just the right amount of humor to it. Taika Waititi could have easily pushed things too far, but he didn’t. Just when you think you know what is going to happen next, he surprises you. Get ready to actually like Nazis (well, one or two of them anyways).

Synopsis

Directed by Taika Waititi and featuring his characteristic absurdist humor, Jojo Rabbit stars Roman Griffin Davis as Johannes "Jojo" Betzler, a young German boy during WWII who is a member of the Hitler Youth. When Jojo discovers that his mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is helping a Jewish girl hide from the Nazis in the attic of their home, he must begin to confront his prejudices and what he thought he knew was right head-on. Waititi also stars in the film as a fictionalized version of Hitler who is Jojo's imaginary friend.

Jojo Rabbit Review: Taika Waititi is The Great Happy/Sad Dictator
8/10

Jojo Rabbit thrives as both an intrepid satire and a sincere coming of age dramedy, seamlessly blending wacky humor with genuine heartbreak.
