  • Laika knows how to pull the heartstrings (pun intended, I apologize for nothing), and Kubo is one of their best films yet. I don't want to give the whole metaphor away, but I think you'll figure it out pretty quickly just by watching the movie. Gorgeous stop motion animation, a top-tier voice cast, and a perfect story make for a satisfying time. Just grab the tissues.

  • This movie is cinematic masterpiece that's animated beautifully and tells a heartwrenching story. I am knocking half a score off the rating, though, because the cast comprises of predominantly white people despite being set in Feudal Japan.

  • There's definitely some questionable casting here, as majority white voice actors was not the best move. However, Kubo has a great animation style and moving story, with an added bonus of a great cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in the closing credits.

Kubo and the Two Strings is Laika's most poignant, entertaining, and beautiful film yet - and one of the best movies, animated or not, of 2016.
