  • Midsommar sets out to terrify you with the lights on and succeeds. Florence Pugh is great, digging into the gored heart of her character, and Ari Aster plumbs the same horror depths as The Wicker Man and the terrifying question of what 'good' people will do to the outsider when no-one can stop them.

  • Imaginative cinematography, a wild story, and a great performance by Florence Pugh secure this movie a place in the best of horror. A grieving woman is lured in by a cult she visits with her emotionally absent boyfriend and his roommates. A pulse-pounder from start to finish.

  • As great as Midsommar is visually and tonally, I will never forgive its problematic depiction of people with bipolar disorder. It implies that people with this mental health condition are violent and dangerous despite the fact that people with mental illness are more likely to be victims.

  • I think Midsommar really did not live up to Hereditary, but is still a good movie in its own right. Ther overall arc is pretty predictable, but enough scenes provide ample scares and shock value on their own to make them memorable.

  • Wasn't as into it as I thought I was going to be. Definitely overrated in my opinion. Still, there are genuinely thrilling moments throughout and the horror is effective when it happens. Didn't care for the main character at all even though her acceptance by the end is an interesting narrative decision.

Midsommar Review: The Director of Hereditary Goes Full Wicker Man
6/10

Midsommar is a mixed bag that blends unsettling horror with bizarre comedy, resulting in a film that's equal parts fascinating and frustrating.
