  • A shaky premise that shines because of Robin Williams' manic energy. There's an undercurrent of transphobia that's more evident in this movie that makes it a hard rewatch, despite how much I loved it as a kid.

  • One of Robin William's finest, Mrs. Doubtfire is a delight from start-to-finish. The tale of a father trying to be in his family's lives even through divorce with... Unconvential means, is delightful because it focuses on love over the bitterness a situation can bring. Neither side is in the wrong, and even Pierce Brosnan's love interest isn't portrayed as a villain, these are simply people going through a rough patch in life. This unbiased and nuance portrayal of divorce is a welcome change of pace. Of course, the spotlight never leaves Williams, who shines through with witty deliveries, charm, and excellent physical comedy. It takes a bitter subject many families go through, and presents it in a way that feels strangely hopeful. Relationships may change, but the love is never lost.

Synopsis

Starring Robin Williams as Daniel Hillard, Mrs. Doubtfire follows a struggling actor going through a divorce who, at the prospect of never being able to see his children again, poses as an elderly British nanny in order to spend time with him, fooling them and his ex-wife in the process. As Mrs. Doubtfire becomes more and more important to the family, Daniel begins to struggle with keeping his secret, and the toll it continues to have on his relationship with his family outside of the character. Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, and Harvey Fierstein also star.
