A rare case of a detective story that's more than a detective story. More than a hard boiled drama or thriller or even psychological thriller. This has some really good tonal stylings of horror and gothic atmosphere.

Serial killer noir sees Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman's hard-bitten cops pursue Kevin Spacey's John Doe for a series of Biblically-inspired crimes. It's a tone piece that hides what's essentially melodrama behind great cinematrography.

A bit trite now, in our post-Saw horror landscape. But putting a major character’s head in a box is so iconic that it outlived the film. An early Fincher film where you can appreciate his talent and particular flavor as a long form director.
