  • Soul is both an emotional commentary on life and death and a love letter to the genre of jazz music. It's one of Pixar's best films in recent years and it is too often underrated.

  • Soul is possibly Pixar's most meditative film on life and death. It is gorgeously animated and really brings home the idea that sometimes the purpose in life is to just live. It doesn't matter how grand or successful you were when you were alive.

  • Not one of my favorite Pixar films, but I will always appreciate an original, heartfelt human story. It's not flashy or over-the-top which is where it probably lost some people, but watching this as someone in their mid-20s who is still trying to figure their purpose in life out felt like a gut punch and a hug all at the same time.

Synopsis

Pixar's Soul follows Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a pianist, who is killed in an accident just before his big opportunity to finally succeed in the world of jazz music. Joe's soul gets stuck in the "Great Before", a purgatory which gives him the idea of reuniting his body and soul. Alongside Foxx, Soul features the voices of Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, and Angela Bassett.

Soul Review: A Heartfelt, If Not Entirely Impactful Pixar Movie
6/10

Soul isn't Pixar's finest or most resonant film, but its beautiful animation and soundtrack, paired with fun characters make for an enjoyable watch.
