Genuinely charming, this coming of age movie allows Hailee Steinfeld the rare opportunity to portray a young female jackass who is the main cause of a lot of her own problems. Steinfeld's chemistry with Woody Harrelson perfectly suits their on-screen relationship, and the movie's empathy and cynicism let it deliver a traditional 'growing up is hard' message with panache.

The Edge of Seventeen is such an underrated coming-of-age dramedy with fantastic performances. Watching a self-loathing, cynical protagonist make troubling decisions and act recklessly is entertaining and relatable. The story is smart and funny, and the character arcs are fully fleshed out. The movie brings an authenticity and complexity that's much needed.
