  • While not being the strongest Wes Anderson film, largely due to how the anthology aspect hinders the narrative, The French Dispatch still has all the clever direction and dry wit that have made him such an iconic director and is still plenty of fun to watch from start to finish. Anderson never fails to tell a uniquely bizarre story, and for better or worse, The French Dispatch is a perfect showing of that.

  • Wes Anderson is at his most Wes Anderson-y in this film, an anthology collection of shorts about a group of writers at the French Dispatch. A true who's who of Hollywood stars appear in the stories, representing the articles in the final issue of the publication. Incredibly charming, but ultimately forgettable.

  • A love letter to real journalism, Wes Anderson holds nothing back in this collection of vignettes starring the staff of the titular magazine. Laugh-out-loud in its visual humor on more than one occasion.

  • I'm kind of torn on this, because I am a huge Wes Anderson fan. And it has everything a Wes Anderson film should have -- outlandish plots, huge cast, and style -- but I felt sometimes went too far in the direction of style over substance, lacking some tightness of his other films.

Synopsis

The French Dispatch is an anthology comedy from director Wes Anderson. The story takes place in 1975 when The French Dispatch magazine’s editor dies of a sudden heart attack. His last wish is for a final issue to be published, which includes four articles, “The Cycling Reporter,” “The Concrete Masterpiece,” “Revisions to a Manifesto,” and “The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner.” Like most Wes Anderson movies, The French Dispatch has a substantial cast, including Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, and Léa Seydoux, to name a few.

The French Dispatch Review: Overstuffed & Dull, Not Wes Anderson's Best

The result is a lighthearted story, but one that is deeply frustrating, sluggish and unengaging, attuned to its stylish details above all else.
