A lot more effective to me than the first movie, the original I mean. Original was kind of stilted by its bad acting and amateur directing (sorry Wes, but hey, his first movie), but this reads as a lot more polished and realistic, making it all the more haunting. More importantly, it makes time for character work and doesn't treat the tragic material like a joke.
