  • When this first came out, it was insane. The idea of a day where people were just free to let loose was this wacky idea that was terrifying as a concept, but not really scary as something that could genuinely happen. However, this is almost more scary the more we move away from it because it doesn't even seem that outrageous anymore and THAT idea is terrifying. That being said, this is significantly weaker than the second movie. Though this is the origin of The Purge, it's really not THAT different from just any other home invasion movie, there's just no cops. Which there usually aren't anyways. So while the reasoning is scary, we aren't seeing anything new. The second one does a far better job at showcasing how the purge itself is scary as they're stuck on the outside seeing the craziness everywhere. Not just a family whose home is being broken into. That being said, the scene with the neighbors is honestly the best part of this whole thing.

  • The Purge is genuinely terrifying because it is so hard to even imagine what you'd do in that situation or how you'd protect yourself and your loved ones. The plot is a fairly simple idea but it's executed very well, and it's so horrifying to watch unfold.

  • A fantastic premise for a horror franchise, but the film never truly takes advantage of all that can be done with it. Interesting choice to make this first one be largely a home thriller. We get glimpses of what is happening outside the house, but most remains a mystery. Still, the solid beginning of a franchise that had its ups and downs.

The Purge is an easily commendable film to those who like the short, sweet, and cathartic violent enjoyment of a solid thriller.
