  • Best Del Toro in my opinion! Sally Hawkins delivering a career-best performance, and also a shoutout to the incredible score from Alexandre Desplat. Could not have released in a more pressing political moment too.

  • I can't believe the Academy was receptive enough to give the Best Picture award to a film about a woman who has sex with a fish man. This movie is beautiful though and the romance in more engaging than it has any right to be. A modern day fairy tale.

  • The Shape of Water was shocking on a lot of levels. I went into it with no expectations since I didn't know much about it, and was pleasantly surprised. The love story is odd, considering one of the partners is a humanoid fish man, but the love story is surprisingly pretty sweet.

  • Guillermo del Toro shines when he's telling stories of monsters who aren't so monstrous, which is why The Shape of Water made such a splash. The real villain is the US government, trying to put a stop to anyone and anything out of the ordinary, from alien fishmen to people of color to a mute cleaning woman. Its weirdness only adds to its beauty.
