Sporadic moments of genius enliven the otherwise bogged-down story of a group of superheroes trying to recover from their abusive childhood. While it starts off sharp, later seasons start to feel deeply unnatural, as events contrive to drive the plot forwards whether it feels natural or not. You MUST read the comics, but the adaptation contains nothing you can't afford to miss.

Great show can't wait for the new season

I truly love this show and its characters. There's something to be said about dysfunctional families who will do anything for one another and who love each other despite their flaws. However, the quality of storytelling dropped off a cliff for season 4. There were so many confusing and unresolved plot points that didn't get addressed that it kind of ruined everything. If season 4 had also been 10 episodes like previous seasons, I might not have hated it as much. Ben deserved better than he got.

Season 4 may have fallen off a bit but i loved seasons 1 through 3 and 4 was ok just chaotic

I know the last season let a lot of fans down but I love this show. Klaus and number 5 were my favourite characters. Amazing actors.

A strange combination of surprisingly fresh and distractingly slow paced. Characters are well developed and plots are largely neglected. Pretty good needle drops.

Let's focus on what happens at the end of s3. Reginald creates a reset universe with no marigold. it was the marigold who got the women pregnant in 89. So in this universe no children was born at all. The Brellies and Lila and Sloane and Ben should be dead in the portal in Reginald's plan, but he wasn't able to complete, so they spawn in the memorial park, but they're all orphans. Their parents are probably out there in this universe, but never conceived them! The same should be for Lila's family! Why is she the only one with a family instead? To quote Ben's famous line: "who the hell are these as**oles?"

Next question is: what about Sloane? And why Luther is alive instead of her if he wasn't even with the other Brellies inside the Oblivion machine? Why don't we get some canon explanation to this and we have to find answers in the fans comments and theories?

No, all we get from Luther in s4 is a useless side plot at the CIA which is maybe somewhat important for Diego but definitely not for Luther's development! To tell the truth his character had much more potential and he was gradually reduced to a not-so-smart big boy since s2. But if there's one thing we knew about him is that he cared for people and most of all he cared for Sloane.

By the end of s3 he was so determined to look for her, his WIFE. What happened then? Why did he stop looking? Why is he not mad at Allison and Reginald for creating a timeline where his wife doesn't exist?

Also, evident writing mistake, Luther's power was not being a half-ape, that was an accident. So it makes no sense at all that he becomes a half-ape again after drinking the marigold!

While The Umbrella Academy started as a novel deconstruction of superhero stories, as time went on, the story became increasingly convoluted with little rationality and the cast stopped being quirky so much as they started just being annoying and tedious to watch. All of it culminated in a series finale that rendered everything in the story moot in as dark and uncomfortable a way as possible, so despite a strong first two seasons, it's hard to recommend the series to anyone.
