  • One of the most unsettling movie theater experiences in my entire life, which is a great compliment to director Jonathan Glazer since that is obviously his intention with The Zone of Interest. Not quite on the level of previous movies that tackle the harrowing subject matter like Schindler's List, but hauntingly effective in its stark juxtaposition and its evidence of the banality of evil.

The Zone of Interest leaves an indelible mark and is a cold reminder of the darkest side of humanity. It's a brutal yet crucial film and one that I think should be required viewing not only for its message but for its achievement in cinematic design. The premise alone is nearly too unfathomable to believe but then once you realize that it's based on real events, something shifts internally that can't be shaken. Not a movie to watch often because you won't have to - you'll never forget it. An essential piece of filmmaking.

The Zone of Interest is an exacting masterpiece that settles into a domestic rhythm that is horrifying in its gestures at normalcy.
