Probably goes without saying.... But, this applies to season 1 exclusively.

However ~ I didn't dislike season 4. (Jody Foster's) I kinda just forgot it was a True Detective.

Season 1 and 3 are masterpieces, but the forgettable season 2 can't change the fact that everyone should check this show out. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey deliver raw, believable performances, playing off each other perfectly and making heady, potentially self-congratulatory philosophizing feel needful and sincere.

True Detective season 1 is so outstanding that I'm glad it's for the most part been left alone, outside of what I feel to be forced connections made in True Detective Night Country, which was a big disappointment for me. Season 1 is unquestionably five stars and one of the best standalone limited series on television. Season 2 really lost the plot and season 3 was good but not great compared to how phenomenal the first season was.

My biggest gripe of the series is really with Night Country, which didn't really feel like a true True Detective installment. It felt derivative of not only the masterful season 1 but also other "frozen" horrors such as The Thing, which I didn't really find intriguing or new. Jodie Foster was the best part of the series, which was to be expected, but the rest of the plot and characters really missed the mark for me. Still, the merit of season 1 earns it at least a 4-star rating overall, whereas Night Country is probably more like a 2.
