The panned 2016 film classic story of Tarzan, a man raised from childhood in the jungle. It was directed by frequent Harry Potter filmmaker David Yates and stars a leading cast of Alexander Skarsgård, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Margot Robbie.
Now, the movie has seen a resurgence in popularity as it makes its way onto the Netflix Global Top 10 list. The Legend of Tarzan came in at No. 2 on the chart for the week of January 15 through January 21 with 7.9 million views. Topping the list this week was Netflix action film Lift, with 36.7 million views.
Now Might Be The Time For Margot Robbie’s Netflix Comeback
The Legend of Tarzan was considered a massive flop at the time of its release. For starters, it failed critically, earning only a 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, it grossed just over $357 million worldwide, which, while not an unacceptable total, was less than hoped for given its estimated $180 million budget.
The Legend of Tarzan featured Robbie in the role of Jane as she was on the rise in her career. While released after her breakout performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, The Legend of Tarzan came before Robbie’s notable roles in movies like I, Tonya and Barbie. At the time, this meant that she was not as much of an established star, whereas now, Robbie’s name is probably what helped draw in a number of those Netflix viewers.
Robbie has been especially in the news recently following her controversial omission from the Best Actress category at the Oscars for her work in Barbie. While this snub is disappointing, the amount of press that Robbie is getting surrounding that and Barbie's success as a whole may bode well for The Legend of Tarzan and her other movies on the platform. Viewers may be more likely to check out other titles she's starred in, thus leading to newfound streaming success.
