Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for DC's Blue Beetle
DC Studios has the perfect answer for Blue Beetle's first big DCU cliffhanger. Having bonded with the alien scarab known as Khaji Da, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) becomes a new superhero, inheriting the Blue Beetle legacy left behind by two previous Beetles (mirroring the original DC Comics). To that end, an DCU show can help explain Blue Beetle's biggest mystery regarding one of these past heroes who came before Reyes.
As seen in Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes and his family discovered the legacy of Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, DC's previous Blue Beetles. Likewise, the Reyes Family makes great use of Kord's old gadgets and vehicles with Ted himself confirmed to have gone missing for years (and even presumed dead). However, Blue Beetle's post-credits scene opened the door for a very exciting possibility in the universe envisioned by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Who Is Ted Kord?
A student of archaeologist Dan Garrett who was the first to be chosen by the Scarab, Ted Kord became the next Blue Beetle. However, Kord didn't bond with Khaji Da, instead using his fortune to build his arsenal of gadgets and vehicles to help him fight crime. It was also revealed that Kord would continually disappear after the death of his wife until a time came when he never came back, his whereabouts unknown. This allowed his villainous sister Victoria (Susan Sarandon) to take over their family's company with Kord Industries becoming a weapons manufacturer.
Following Blue Beetle's ending where Jaime and his family stopped Victoria and her OMAC project, the post-credits scene revealed that a recorded message was activated in Ted Kord's secret base, confirming that he never meant to abandon his daughter Jenny (Bruna Marquezine) and that he was still alive somewhere. This sets up an exciting future for Ted, and the new DCU may have already revealed where that future could start.
The Original Blue Beetle Can Appear In Booster Gold
As seen in the original comics, Ted Kord's Blue Beetle is best friends with Michael Jon Carter's Booster Gold, a time traveler from the future using advanced tech in the present to fight crime as a superhero. With a Booster Gold show already in development for the new DCU, Ted's friendship with Booster could explain where he's been, perhaps trying to travel through time in an attempt to save his wife and/or becoming lost in the time stream. There are several different narrative options, though Booster Gold does seem like the perfect vehicle to help explain where the original Blue Beetle has been all this time.
Booster Gold Would Allow Jaime Reyes To Continue As Blue Beetle
Kord potentially having a role in Blue Beetle 2 wouldn't be unexpected as Ted could perhaps become a mentor to Jaime. However, a role in Booster Gold would certainly help ensure that Ted doesn't overshadow Reyes as the current Blue Beetle, having a ing role in potential sequels while also having his own adventures alongside Booster in the new DCU. While conjecture, it does seem like a perfect and very exciting answer for the DCU's first big cliffhanger.
