Warning: Spoilers ahead for Ted Lasso season 3's finale!Since season 3 was confirmed as the final outing for the show, star Jason Sudeikis has weighed in on the possibility of a Ted Lasso season 4. Shortly after the third season was announced, it became common knowledge that Ted Lasso would come to an end. The finale of Ted Lasso season 3 made this somewhat evident, with many of the characters' emotional arcs being wrapped up, as well as the journey of A.F.C Richmond under the titular manager.

However, as is the case with many TV shows, some elements have been left open-ended for a potential continuation in the form of Ted Lasso season 4. Similarly, Ted Lasso's many actors, actresses, writers, and showrunners have been privy to many theories and questions about the show potentially returning for a fourth outing. That being said, none have been questioned more than the creator, writer, and main star of Ted Lasso Jason Sudeikis, who has commented at length about whether the show will continue beyond season 3's ending.

Sudeikis Shared Ted Lasso Was Meant To Be 3 Seasons

At the red-carpet premiere for Ted Lasso season 3 at the beginning of March, Sudeikis was questioned on the status of the show after its third outing. When asked if Ted Lasso season 3 would be the end, Sudeikis had this to say:

“I mean, there’s always Cameo, right? This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering. Maybe by May 31, once all 12 episodes of the season [have been released], they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need anymore, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.”

This clearly outlines that Ted Lasso was always intended to be three seasons in length. From the beginning of the show's conception, Sudeikis and his team have had a story in mind with a specific ending, something that is increasingly rare for modern TV shows. With Ted Lasso season 3, episode 12, Sudeikis and the rest of the crew have finally told that story. While stating that he is thankful to the fans for wanting more than three seasons, Sudeikis insisted they wait until they view season 3 in case they realize the ending he and his team came up with was satisfying enough to forego Ted Lasso season 4.

Sudeikis Doesn't Know Whether Ted Lasso Season 4 Will Happen

Moving away from his comments at the Ted Lasso season 3 premiere, Sudeikis was also quizzed on a potential season 4 after his Emmy win for his performance as the titular character in September 2022. Sudeikis' response to Ted Lasso season 4 questions was as follows:

"I don’t know, it’s up to more factors than myself. The response has been overwhelming. We have a tremendous group of writers, actors, people in production and post-production, all of those thrown in the jambalaya of possibility. I couldn’t say yes or no. I know this part of the show is what it’s supposed to be. I apologize for not giving you a direct answer because that’s more helpful for headlines. If I knew, I wouldn’t tell you."

While not as insistent on Ted Lasso only being three seasons, these comments still outline the uncertainty about Ted Lasso season 4, at least from Sudeikis' point of view. As rightly pointed out by the lead actor, the decision to continue the show falls on many shoulders other than his. While Sudeikis is vital to the show both in front and behind the camera, Ted Lasso has a vast cast and crew that all contribute to the success of the show. Sudeikis itted that he could not say whether Ted Lasso season 4 would happen and that he would keep it close to the chest even if he did know.

Naturally, the premiere of Ted Lasso season 3 saw Sudeikis interacting with many of the press. Another of these outlets was E! News, by whom Sudeikis was once again asked about the potential of Ted Lasso season 4 being made:

"I think we have a talented enough writing staff, an incredible cast, tremendous production and post-production crew. They definitely have the ability and there's plenty of water left in that sponge to squeeze out. All I know is that the story we wanted to tell and the one that we're telling, that's what we're here tonight to celebrate. What happens beyond this, I won't know until this is all done."

Similarly to his earlier comments, Sudeikis insisted that Ted Lasso season 3 ended the story he and his team wanted to tell when they began the show. Interestingly though, these quotes are arguably the most open Sudeikis has seemed in regard to Ted Lasso season 4 happening. As rightly pointed out by the Ted Lasso actor, Sudeikis insists the crew behind the show are more than capable of producing a continuation thanks to their immense talent across the board. This is certainly evident by the show thus far, with the cast, crew, writers, and directors proving they know how best to handle these characters and their stories.

Furthermore, Sudeikis mentions that he and the rest of the team behind the series could be open to talks about Ted Lasso season 4 once season 3 is over. It makes sense that he would not want to think about a potential continuation of the show when promoting the ending he and his crew envisioned from the beginning. Although, Sudeikis' comments about plenty of story potential being left for the characters post-season 3 is interesting, to say the least. Now that Ted Lasso season 3 is over, maybe Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly will reconvene to discuss the possibility of the show's story continuing.
