The second season of Ted Lasso concluded in October 2021, with no exact return date yet for season 3, leaving viewers with many unanswered questions in its cliffhanger finale. Many plot lines, from Nathan's new job as coach of the rival West Ham team to Keeley and Roy's relationship being on the rocks, were left unresolved.
While they wait, many fans have ideas about what they would like the hit Apple TV series to include in the new season. With season 2 creating more questions than it answered, these are the characters and storylines that fans want to see return so that they can be resolved and get some closure.
Nathan's New Job
The last scenes of season 2 featured one of the biggest Ted Lasso plot twists in the show's history. The previously shy and self-deprecating Nate took a turn for worse, selling a story about Ted having a panic attack at a match to the newspapers before taking a job at the rival West Ham team, owned by previous AFC Richmond owner, Rupert Mannion.
The season ends without viewers knowing how the AFC Richmond crew reacted to this news - and what it means for the team's future. Ted, who was a large part of Nate being promoted from team kit-man to coach, will feel especially betrayed. Given that he sold stories to the press, Nate would likely have also given away the team's game tactics to the rival team.
Will Vs The Wonder Kid
One of Nate's most decisive turns into a darker, more arrogant character is seen in his behavior towards Will, the new kit-man who takes over his old job. Just like Nathan's former self, Will is a sweet and shy young man who wants to please everyone on the team. So when is seen bullying Will in his new position of power, this came as a shock for viewers.
From the beginning of the show, bullying within AFC Richmond has been addressed. With the formerly-bullied Nathan becoming a bully himself, viewers will want to see him get his comeuppance and learn from his mistakes. It will also be interesting for fans to see how Will deals with this abuse of power compared to Nathan in the past.
Roy's Retirement
Roy Kent is an aging footballer whose athletic talents are not what they used to be. In season 2, a now-retired Roy looks to find himself in this new phase of life. He did briefly work as a footballer commentator, catering to his often ruthless remarks. However, by the end of season 2, he quit to help coach the Richmond team.
Still, Roy seems unsure about his new life. He and girlfriend Keeley are spending more and more time apart, and often butts heads with fellow coach, Ted. He still remains his usual hot-headed self, refusing to coach enemy Jamie Tartt. With his work and love life pulling him in different directions, Roy has some decisions to make in the new season.
Roy & Keeley's Relationship Explored
Roy and Keeley's interactions towards the end of season 2 left fans with big questions going into Ted Lasso season 3. The couple has been prone to jealousy, especially when Roy connects with his niece's teacher and Keeley's ex, Jamie, confesses his love for her. Keeley's new venture into business has driven a wedge between them, as the season ends with Roy agreeing to go on their vacation alone while Keeley continues working.
In season 3, Roy and Keeley need to address their tension and reaffirm their loyalties to one another for their relationship to survive. If the couple cannot deal with their new long-distance situation and overcome their jealousy, the new season may be the end for Roy and Keeley.
Coach Beard's Mysterious Love Life
Coach Beard has always been a man of few words. The character often remains tight-lipped throughout the series, and that includes his personal life. In a season 2 episode focusing on Beard, viewers spent the night with the coach and learned more about his rocky mental health and his love for Jane, who has briefly appeared in previous episodes.
Still, fans know little about Beard and his life. Having seen Beard more in-depth in the season 2 episode, viewers will be keen to learn more about his character and the role he plays at Richmond as a fellow coach, alongside Ted. Fans will be especially eager to see if Jane and Beard get back together.
Roy & Jamie's Newfound Friendship
Over the last season, the infamously icy Roy Kent has proven himself to be a sweetheart - sometimes. While sworn enemies in the first season, the second season saw Roy softening to his former teammate. While coaching, Roy refuses to aid in Jamie's training. In one later scene, however, Roy hugs Jamie after witnessing Jamie's argument with his abusive father. In a later episode, he forgave the young player for confessing his love to Keeley, Jamie's ex-girlfriend and Roy's current.
Still, it is difficult to know where Jamie and Roy currently stand. With Roy and Keeley's relationship increasingly under strain, Roy may not look too kindly on his presence as the pair are prone to jealousy. Viewers will have to wait until season 3 to see if the pair can truly bury the hatchet.
Jamie's Feelings For Keeley
Speaking of Jamie and Keeley, what will become of the former couple? In season 2, Jamie tries to better himself and start afresh, by cutting ties with his father and becoming more honest, which prompted him to come clean about his feelings to his ex. This comes at a bad time for Keeley's boyfriend Roy, as the pair have been tense over Roy's chemistry with another woman.
With Roy going abroad and Keeley working in London in the season 2 finale, Jamie could finally make a move on Keeley behind his frenemy's back. Season 3 is sure to test the loyalties of the three characters and whether they can truly leave their more toxic pasts behind.
Rebecca's Relationship Status
The show began shortly after Rebecca's divorce from her husband - and a marriage where she gave up on her dream of having children of her own. Season 2 saw Rebecca looking for love again, potentially finding it in an unusual place - with a much-younger player at Richmond, Sam Obisanya.
At the end of season 2, Rebecca begs Sam not to move away, and Sam eventually decides to stay. Their relationship status, however, is still ambiguous going into season 3. Additionally, many Ted Lasso fans believe the titular character is harboring feelings of his own for Rebecca, so the third season could add to this theory.
Ted's Therapy Continues
While Ted Lasso is typically a feel-good sitcom, it has been prone to some darker moments. In season 2, Ted reluctantly talks to Sharon, the team therapist, after his anxiety spirals out of control and begins to frequently have panic attacks. After initial protests over the ethics of therapy, Ted breaks down and confides in Sharon about the death of his father that haunts him to this day.
At the end of season 2, while making these breakthroughs, Sharon's time with the team comes to an end. Ted, however, is still struggling with panic attacks. Fans will be eager to see how Ted deals with his mental health in the new season, especially if he's willing to continue taking therapy sessions and perhaps see Sharon in his own time outside of work.
The Mystery Of Mrs. Lasso
Ted's failing marriage is one of the reasons he moved to England to coach AFC Richmond, and at the end of season 2, the relationship's status is still up in the air. While officially filing for divorce, Ted's estranged wife, Michelle, still talks to Ted on a semi-regular basis, as they co-parent their son Henry. Still, their conversations are awkward and an uncomfortably silent conversation at Christmas causes Ted to spiral and end the FaceTime call.
By the end of season 2, Michelle lends her after news of his panic attacks break, but they still aren't on great . Being long-distance and co-parenting, Ted needs to make decisions in the new season. He needs to decide if the relationship can still be salvaged and if the long-distance parenting should continue, as he lives halfway across the world from his son.
