Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Teen Wolf: The Movie.Teen Wolf: The Movie raises one major Derek mystery, but by the end of the film, it fails to provide an answer. Similarly to the beginning of Teen Wolf, the audience doesn't know much about Derek's life or about what the character has been up to in the past 13 years since the Teen Wolf characters were last seen on screen. Much has happened in the personal lives of Scott's pack, as shown by the new relationship the audience sees in Teen Wolf: The Movie and the lives the characters are leading at the beginning of the film, many of them far from Beacon Hills.
It is safe to say that Derek's life in Teen Wolf: The Movie has changed drastically from when viewers saw him last in the final season of Teen Wolf. Set 10 years after the original series, Teen Wolf: The Movie's timeline follows the characters that viewers saw as teenagers in the series in a new adventure as fully grown adults. As one of the few characters to actually stay in Beacon Hills, Derek is now a consultant for the local police department, while also raising his 15-year-old son, Eli Hale by himself.
Teen Wolf: The Movie Doesn't Reveal Who Eli's Mom Is
Although Teen Wolf: The Movie explores Derek and Eli's relationship a lot during the course of the film, it never answers the question of who Eli's mother is. In fact, nobody seemed to raise the question at all. Derek eventually opens up over the course of Teen Wolf: The Movie, recalling the moment he transformed in front of his then-infant son to protect him from coyotes. However, Derek never mentions anything about Eli's mother or any past relationship, nor does any other character ask about her, leaving this mystery unanswered by the end of the film.
Teen Wolf: The Movie the question surrounding Eli's mother's identity becomes even more relevant as Derek, the only parental figure in Eli's life, dies. While he is now part of Scott's pack and certainly has a system through the pack and Derek's friends, like Sheriff Stilinski, Derek's death seems like cause for Eli to find, or his other absent parent. Moreover, Eli's mother does not appear at Derek's funeral nor takes care of her son now that Derek is dead, which may suggest that she either doesn't want to or cannot be involved in Eli's life but does answer the question of why Derek was raising Eli alone.
How Teen Wolf Can Answer More Questions About Eli Hale
While Derek's story may now be over, Eli's has just begun. During Teen Wolf: The Movie, Eli starts activating his abilities, learning how to heal thanks to Scott. However, his journey as a werewolf is not over as he still hasn't transformed into a werewolf. After Derek's death in the Teen Wolf movie, Eli has only recently become part of the pack, which is essential for a werewolf to survive. Similarly to Scott at the beginning of the series, there is still much Eli has to learn about werewolves and other supernatural creatures he may encounter in the future.
Although the Teen Wolf creators are exploring similar themes and creatures with the 2023 series Wolf Pack, the ending of Teen Wolf: The Movie might suggest a possible future Teen Wolf spinoff that focuses on Eli Hale. As Eli is around the same age as Scott was at the beginning of Teen Wolf and at the beginning of his werewolf journey, it would be interesting to see a series focused on him. Moreover, a possible Eli Hale spinoff could finally answer the questions about Eli's mother which are left unexplained at the end of Teen Wolf: The Movie.
