As The Bachelor enters its fourth week, contestant Carolina Sofia has become increasingly criticized for her time on the show. Grant Ellis, the leading man, was presented with 25 eligible bachelorettes, but only one can win. With dozens of women eagerly vying for his heart, tensions have risen and drama has skyrocketed. Some competitors have monopolized time with Grant and others are feeling resentful. Carolina has remained one of the most controversial players with a vast majority of the screen time.
The competitors on The Bachelor season 29 have been whittled down to just 10 women and many of these women have gripes with Carolina. While she and Grant share a connection, her commentary and private conversations have led to some break-out fights. The subsequent drama has gotten so heated that one competitor, Rose Sombke, self-eliminated. Although the drama surrounding her and Rose seems somewhat spiteful, Carolina is not to blame for the frustrations of the other women. She has been villainized through editing to produce more entertaining scenes, but what’s truly important is her chemistry with Grant.
Carolina’s Uncertainty Should Be Expected
Carolina Questions The Show's Format
The contestants freaked out when Carolina committed a Bachelor cardinal sin: expressing uncertainty about the process. She posed a question in which she understandably second-guessed the format of the show and the rushed dating stage. In the fourth episode of the season, and after only one date with Grant, Carolina delivered the line:
“How do you get engaged after one date, essentially.”
Juliana Pasquarosa, having not received a one-on-one date with Grant was especially insulted by the comment. She took the public relations producer to the side to confront her. Juliana insinuated that if Carolina was unsure, she should leave. The conversation didn’t go as planned, with Carolina retorting, “I don’t think I’ve ever asked for your opinion.” While this comment was blunt, Carolina has every right to question the process. Her uncertainty about the timeline does not dictate her interest in Grant.
Juliana later approached Grant and suggested that Carolina was ungrateful and unhappy with the process. This comment villainized Carolina even further and left Grant questioning her intentions. Although she was able to explain herself to Grant during the final cocktail party, the damage had been done. Carolina was not fully satisfied with the conclusion as she left several comments under a Bachelor Instagram post.
This post summarized the drama surrounding Grant, Carolina, and Juliana. Many of the comments come to Carolina’s defense, as the bachelorette was both honest and objectively right. Carolina writes, “Imagine being 100% sure about a man 5 seconds into knowing him lol.” She stands by her comments and the fans are ive. Carolina is the victim of intentionally negative edits, but viewers are seeing right through it.
Carolina’s Frustrations Regarding The Dates Are Fair
The t Dating Is Challenging
Several of Carolina’s comments have hit the nerves of the other women, especially since she has received the most screen time and attention from Grant. As the women awaited Grant’s return from a one-on-one date with Dina, Carolina complained about her insufficient time with the lead. The controversial star reported, “It’s definitely weird to watch other people’s intimate moments.” This comment was particularly tone-deaf considering her on-stage make-out with Grant after the group performance.
While the complaint feels self-serving, the consecutive dates must be unimaginably difficult.
The show encourages genuine connections from women while allowing only brief interactions. As the competitors grow more emotionally attached, watching other women “steal” away their potential life-long partner must be gut-wrenching. Carolina joked about her feelings by saying, “If I’m lucky, someone might kiss him in front of me.” Her humor seemed like a necessary venue for expressing her frustration. Carolina seems to harbor genuine feelings for Grant and her comment, while tone-deaf, is understandable.
Carolina Isn’t At Fault For Rose’s Mistake
Rose Started The Drama With Carolina
Most eyes were on Carolina as Rose ultimately self-eliminated after their major drama. To summarize, Rose approached Carolina off-camera after the group performance date. Despite Carolina and Grant’s intimacy on stage, Rose claimed that the lead had assured her he was solely focused on her. This understandably upset Carolina. She approached Grant, and he denied these claims.
When Grant confronted Rose, she backpedaled and claimed that she misunderstood. This left the lead frustrated and Rose on undesirable with Grant. Rose confronted Carolina tearfully and stated that she felt “backstabbed” by Carolina’s actions. While Rose’s feelings were justifiable, the drama began with her. Carolina’s reaction to Rose’s unnecessary comment was fair. Of course, Carolina would ask Grant if the comment was true.
The consequences of Rose’s actions are not Carolina’s fault.
Although Carolina is tied to much of the show’s drama, her connection with Grant is undeniable. Her villain edit on The Bachelor is predominantly caused by misrepresentation. Carolina is simply excelling in the competition. Only time will tell if Carolina’s attachment to drama is as consistent as her connection with Grant.
