Ahead of the release of Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the caped crusader.
The Batman will go further back on the timeline of the character, focusing on his early years defending the city of Gotham from colorful criminals. When new evil surfaces in town, killing off prominent citizens, Batman must reluctantly team up with Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and trace the crimes back to the mysterious Riddler (Paul Dano), even though the investigation will turn up troubling secrets about the Wayne family. The film will also feature Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
Today, The Independent live-streamed the premiere of The Batman, which took place in London a week ahead of the film's theatrical debut. They had the opportunity to speak with director Matt Reeves, who previously helmed Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. During the discussion, he revealed that early talks are being had for the sequel:
"I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d be excited to tell more stories… We are already telling other stories in the streaming space, we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we’re doing a Penguin show with Colin [Farrell], which is gonna be super cool. And we’re working on some other stuff too but we have started talking about another movie."
Ideas have already been floated around for a potential sequel to The Batman, which could include some major characters from the comics who are missing in this iteration. First of all, the sequel could feature his famed sidekick Robin, who may be getting a setup tease in this film. Other major figures that have been considered for this new Batman universe include the Court of Owls, Calendar Man, and Mr. Freeze, who was previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1997's Batman & Robin.
The Batman 2's existence will obviously be contingent on the success of next week's premiere. However, considering the way that IMAX preview tickets for The Batman sold out instantly in 350 theaters, there probably isn't anything to worry about on the box office front. Likewise, even if it struggles, the Penguin spinoff series, which is further into production, might give the property a boost like HBO Max's wildly successful Peacemaker spinoff of The Suicide Squad, giving the sequel film another shot at the brass ring if it is ever in question in the first place.
