Season 2 started slow, but the buildup to the finale was worth the wait. The season was more character-focused, especially for the ing characters of The Boys and The Seven. Also, the introduction of a new villain intensified the rough position for The Boys and the challenges that they will face in taking down Vought. However, the season was still filled with action-packed scenes and the usual comedic moments. As we take a look back at season 2, the episodes were ranked from the worst to the best.

The Big Ride

Homelander, Stormfront, and Maeve talk in a circle in The Boys.

In season 2, episode 1, "The Big Ride," The Boys become fugitives, Stormfront becomes the newest member of The Seven, and Hughie secretly meets with Annie, a.k.a. Starlight, to expose Vought-America. In the midst of all this, Homelander's intentions of controlling Vought do not work with the appointment of Edgar Stan as the newest CEO.

The season premiere served as the exposition for what was to come for season 2. Though the episode has some gruesome moments like Raynor's unexpected head explosion, most of the plot left viewers indifferent about the narrative. The first episode was not horrible, but in comparison to content from season 1, "The Big Ride" was mediocre at best in its narration and interest in its story.

Proper Preparation And Planning

The Boys Proper Preparation and Planning

Following the slow beginning of season 2, "Proper Preparation and Planning" was the season's second episode that  was also an average episode. However, it does serve as the extended premise and buildup to the remaining season. The Boys learn about the newest supe-terrorist and his sibling relationship with Kimiko, which only complicates the matters of their mission. However, there is also an intense relationship between Hughie and Butcher, concerning the circumstances from the season 1 finale.

On the other hand, "Proper Preparation and Planning" focused extensively on the character arcs of ing characters like Queen Maeve and The Deep to provide a introspect about their backstory. Their character arcs become effective and develop the motivations that foreshadow what is to come towards the end. As for Homelander, he is attempting to be a father figure to his son, which surprisingly makes us sympathetic towards his intentions. However, his way of handling it is not acceptable as he is only trying to get Ryan to use his powers and become a Homelander 2.0.

Nothing Like It In The World

Kimiko stands among protestors in The Boys.

There is not a whole lot of action in season 2, episode 4, "Nothing Like It in the World." However, it is the one episode that finally reunites Becca and Butcher and becomes the turning point of season 2. Also, following up from episode 3, Kimiko has a vendetta against Stormfront, which leaves Frenchie worried about her rage.

However, Starlight goes on a secret mission with Hughie and MM as they investigate about Liberty and her whereabouts. At this moment, we learned about the real identity of Stormfront, who happened to be Liberty in the 70s. Viewers are surprised about the revelations about Stormfronts and hope that The Boys can expose her past.

We Gotta Go Now

The Boys We Gotta Go

Season 2, episode 5, "We Gotta Go Now," is another buildup episode that focuses on the relationship between characters, while also lightening up the season with its comical moments. As things finally start to be in favor of The Boys, Homelander is caught killing an innocent civilian, and his actions are shared on social media. However, these events lead to Stormfront, helping Homelander, and forming a sexual relationship.

As for The Boys, Butcher wants to retire, following his inability to persuade Becca from leaving the facility. Eventually, when Hughie and MM arrive to dissuade him at his aunt's home, Black Noir surprisingly found them. However, the attack halts when Butcher blackmails Edgar in releasing the information about Ryan and renewing his brotherly relationship with Hughie.

The Bloody Doors Off

MM, Kimiko, and Frenchie sneak into a hospital in The Boys episode "The Bloody Door."

Episode 6 also focuses and builds upon the complications and backstories, particularly that of Frenchie. The Boys encounter a former The Seven member, Lamplighter, as they search for evidence against Vought. Things get chaotic when Compound V patients escape from their cells and start attacking the people inside the facility. At the moment, we learn about the heart-breaking circumstances of Mallory's grandchildren, which causes a guilt-ridden Lamplighter to become a witness to testify against Vought.

As for the remainder of The Boys, Butcher still has his reservations about Starlight, which complicates things for Hughie. However, when Hughie gets injured, Starlight and Butcher are forced to work together in means of saving Hughie. By doing so, Starlight does the unspeakable when she accidentally kills an innocent civilian, which makes viewers have second thoughts about her.

Over The Hill With The Swords Of A Thousand Men

The Boys, covered in blood and dirt, all sit together on a couch.

Despite the slow start in season 2, things started to pick up with episode 3, "Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men." With the secret leak from Starlight about Compound V to the public, it seemed that circumstances were finally in The Boys' favor. Also, as The Boys try to hand over the supe-terrorist, they find themselves being tracked by The Seven with a hilarious chase by The Deep and his whale.

As if we thought Stormfront was the tech-savvy and progressive influencer, we soon learn the truth about her real intentions, which left viewers shocked and shaken. Not only does she kill the supe-terrorist in front of Kimiko's eyes, but she purposefully attacked a black community and placed the blame on Kimiko's brother, Kenji. Despite the circumstances, it was the first exhilarating episode of season 2, which leaves viewers wanting more of what is to come in regards to the show's newest villain.

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker

Lamplighter holds a lighter in The Boys episode "Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker."

In the penultimate episode of season 2, the story not only builds up to the season finale but also takes an exciting turn of events with Starlight caught as a mole. Everything goes to take down Vought, but they need another strong witness to end Vought for good. However, things take a turn when Lamplighter lights himself on fire while on a rescue mission of Starlight.

However, we also see some people switching sides with Queen Maeve helping Starlight to escape while leaving Black Noir injured. When Butcher convinces Vogelbaum to testify, everything seemed swell in court. Unexpectedly, the episode ends with key figures heads blowing up with blood splattered everywhere from left to right.  What appeared as the end of destroying Vought was soiled within a minute, leaving viewers horrified.

What I Know

The Boys look shocked in the episode "What I Know."

In the season 2 finale, "What I Know," viewers were in for a treat for an episode that was explosive and thrilling. The season 2 finale was a roller coaster of emotions from cheers and laughter to shocks and sadness. With the help of A-Train, The Boys finally have the evidence to expose Stormfront and put Vought in some serious trouble with the press and public.

However, to make viewers ecstatic, Queen Maeve, Kimiko, and Starlight all fought together to take down the Nazi-lover, Stormfront. However, it was the episode's final moments that left viewers heart-broken with the death of Becca when Ryan tried to save his mom from Stormfront. Shockingly, Ryan also chooses Butcher over Homelander, so viewers were satisfied with the circumstances and feeling sympathetic for the kid. With Vought's plans foiled and Homelander defeated, The Boys came out as the winners, leaving each member going their separate paths.
