The faith-based historical epic The Chosen has taken the world by storm, and the Christian drama returned for its triumphant fifth season in 2025. For the first time in the long history of biblical film and television, The Chosen aims to illuminate the life of Jesus Christ through an episodic multi-season series that is comparable to many of the most popular streaming programs. The series not only explores Jesus' life but the lives of those who interacted with him by expanding upon the stories of Christian doctrine.

The Chosen was an immediate hit with its target audience while also becoming something of a streaming phenomenon on various platforms. While there have been many movies based on the life of Jesus, The Chosen sets itself apart by being a true character drama, and utilizing the ever-popular episodic format to its full advantage. For those of the Christian faith, the story of Jesus is very familiar, but The Chosen has kept things fresh by eschewing the usually flat depictions of Jesus. When season 5 arrived, it continued the show's blockbuster trend by debuting in theaters to huge crowds.

while audience scores don't tell the whole story, they are still an important metric to consider.

As with previous installments of the series, The Chosen season 5 (aka The Last Supper) hasn't really garnered a lot of attention from secular sources. However, the three-part theatrical release has certainly scored big with its intended audience. All three installments of season 5 have scored Rotten Tomatoes audience scores in the high 90s, and while audience scores don't tell the whole story, they are still an important metric to consider. The independent production is in a different league than the usual Hollywood fare, but it nevertheless has managed to outperform other releases.

While critical reaction has been almost nonexistent, there's no denying the season's impressive box-office returns. Part 1 has grossed over $20 million since its debut (via Collider) and, though Part 2 dropped considerably to $10 and Part 3 only $5 million, it's still an unqualified success. Considering the fact that The Chosen season 5 is an independent and limited release, it's somewhat amazing that it has managed to crack the top 5 at the box office in two of its three installments.

The Chosen season 5 part 1 debuted on March 28, 2025.

The progress of the story of The Chosen isn't particularly surprising to those who are familiar with the biblical tale, but the ending of season 5 leaves a lot left unresolved for future seasons. As suggested by the title, The Last Supper concludes an incredibly crucial part of Jesus' final days, but his crucifixion and eventual resurrection remain unseen for now. The show has already been renewed for a sixth season, and a seventh is planned to follow. Those two chapters will wrap up the biblical epic with Jesus' death and return, a well-worn part of the story.
