The Conjuring: Last Rites set photos have revealed a first look at Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson's return as Lorraine and Ed Warren in the fourth movie bearing the franchise's name. The Conjuring: Last Rites story will be the final installment of the titular universe to feature the Warrens investigating a supernatural event, bringing the story to a head. While details about what to expect haven’t been revealed just yet, the movie started filming in September, with production set to conclude later this month.

Now, TheConjuring.Updates on Instagram has posted images of Farmiga and Wilson in The Conjuring: Last Rites as production on the sequel continues. The images showcase Farmiga smiling next to someone on set, who holds a pink umbrella above her head, and Wilson seemingly in character staring at something with concern. A hearse can be seen behind them and, from the formal way they're dressed, they appear to be attending a funeral. These images offer clues about the movie before its release on September 5, 2025.

What The Conjuring 4's New Images Mean For The Movie

Last Rites May Focus Heavily On Death

At the end of The Nun II, the latest movie in the franchise, Ed and Lorraine return in a mid-credits scene, being told of something that appears to be what leads into Maurice's (Jonas Bloquet) exorcism of Valak (Bonnie Aarons). This could set the stage for what The Conjuring: Last Rites will be about, bringing a definitive end to the demonic presence that's been tormenting people throughout history. Although there's nothing official yet about what the final movie is going to be about, it could tell a story tying everything in the franchise together.

The Conjuring Universe includes offshoots like the Annabelle series, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona - but what is the best viewing order?

However, since Ed and Lorraine Warren's real cases were used as the basis for the last three mainline movies, chances are high the next installment will follow the same formula. Some of the couple's later cases include the Smurl family haunting and the haunting at Union Cemetery, the latter of which could align with the behind-the-scenes images. However, since the sequel has been described as the final movie in the franchise, some liberties may be taken with the real history in order to provide a fitting conclusion to everything that's happened throughout the series.

With the franchise seemingly closing the book on the Warrens for good, it's unclear just how the series is going to end their stories. Since a TV series for The Conjuring universe is also in development, The Conjuring: Last Rites may only be closing the book on one chapter of the overall universe. If this is the case, then instead of focusing on demons of the past, perhaps the movie would be better off looking only at the Warrens, giving their characters a proper ending within the long-running franchise.

The Conjuring: Last Rites will be the ninth movie in The Conjuring universe.
