Set in the world of James Wan's horror franchise, The Conjuring TV show will bring the scares to the small screen. Wan kicked off The Conjuring franchise in 2013 with the eponymous first movie that revolved around a farmhouse haunted by disturbingly dark forces in 1971. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga starred as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, roles that they reprised in the Conjuring sequels.

The Conjuring Universe also includes spin-offs around the haunted doll Annabelle and an incarnation of the demon Valak known as the Nun. While Annabelle and The Nun have emerged as successful brands on their own, The Conjuring universe also includes The Curse of La Llorona which was inspired by Latin American folklore. The franchise also branched out with short films, including The Nurse and Blund's Lullaby. With such a diverse lineup of narratives interwoven narratives, the Conjurverse feels ripe for being explored in The Conjuring TV series.

While Bloys didn't give any clues about the show's development, it's encouraging to know HBO hasn't abandoned the idea.

Though it may not be the news fans were hoping for, the latest update confirms HBO's plans to develop a Conjuring show. The announcement came in June 2024 and was grouped with several other HBO projects. Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO and Max content, casually revealed that TV shows based on Crazy Rich Asians and The Green Lantern were in the works, and he also offhandedly mentioned that The Conjuring was still in the works. While Bloys didn't give any clues about the show's development, it's encouraging to know HBO hasn't abandoned the idea.

There are other properties like The Conjuring, which is a big movie franchise that we’re developing into a series, as well as Crazy Rich Asians. We’re developing in DC, the Green Lantern property, as a series as well.

The Conjuring TV Show Is Confirmed

HBO Announced The Show In 2023

The Conjuring TV show is confirmed. On April 12, 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery officially stated that the Conjuring show will continue the movie franchise's story. The Conjuring Universe has been a major moneymaker for Warner Bros, currently ranking as the world's highest-grossing horror franchise (via Collider). This potential makes a TV show a logical next step, especially as many major franchises are branching out to other forms of media.

However, little has been revealed since the first announcement, and the progress of the development is unknown. In June 2024, HBO's Casey Bloys reaffirmed that the TV adaptation of The Conjuring was still happening, but no details are known beyond that. With that in mind, nothing is known about the show's cast, and it isn't clear if stars like Patrick Wilson or Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles.

Max has confirmed that the Conjuring TV show plot will “continue the story established in the feature films.” While the films in question will definitely include the original Conjuring trilogy, it is not known if any other Conjuring lore like The Curse of La Llorona or the short films will be incorporated into the series. As the trilogy has gone forward in a chronological manner, it is possible that the Conjuring TV show will be set after 1981, the year of the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

If the Warrens do lead The Conjuring TV show story then it might focus on yet another case that challenged the demonologist couple. It is already being speculated that The Conjuring 4 might skip highly-publicized cases like the one that inspired the 2009 film The Haunting of Connecticut and focus on other terrifying but relatively low-profile cases such as the Smurl haunting of 1986. With a roster of literally thousands of cases to pull from, The Conjuring show could highlight many such underrated events.
