- Despite divisive opinions, The Crow 2024 introduces fresh elements and a different take on the story.
The 2024 adaptation of The franchise of The Crow has come back to life with a new adaptation of James O’Barr’s comic book series of the same name. Directed by Rupert Sanders, The Crow stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric, a young man with substance-use disorder who meets Shelly (FKA Twigs) at a rehab center. Despite what many believe, Sanders’ The Crow isn’t a remake of Alex Proyas’ 1994 movie, and it’s a new adaptation of O’Barr’s works.
The Crow sees Shelly chased by demonic crime lord Vincent Roeg (Danny Huston), who sends his people to kill her and Eric. However, Eric is resurrected by a crow, who guides him through his revenge mission against his and Shelly’s murderers and grants him immediate healing from any wound. The Crow faced a lot of backlash since its announcement, so it was going to face big challenges once it was released. At the time of writing, The Crow has a very low critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (though still not the worst in the franchise), but its audience score is a lot higher.

The Crow Ending Explained
The ending of 2024's The Crow gives the titular character a bittersweet climax that leaves questions and the door open for a possible sequel.
What Audiences Like About The Crow 2024 On Rotten Tomatoes
The Crow 2024 Has A Fresh Audience Score
The Crow’s audience score has reached a “fresh” certificate with a 65% score.
The Crow 2024 currently holds a 19% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, which could go either higher or lower these days, but it’s highly unlikely it will reach a “fresh” label. Critics have pointed out its pace, the lack of chemistry between Skarsgård and Twigs, and Skarsgård’s disappointing performance as some of The Crow’s biggest flaws. Surprisingly, The Crow’s audience score is the opposite, as it has reached a “fresh” certificate with a 65% score that, just like its critics' score, could go higher or lower in the following days but might not lose its “fresh” label.
Most viewers' reviews encourage the rest to go into The Crow 2024 with an open mind and not expecting a remake.
Viewers are praising Sanders and company’s effort to create a new world within one that’s already established and known, and liked that this version added a lot more to the backstory of Eric and Shelly. Viewers are also praising The Crow 2024’s soundtrack, cinematography, and action scenes, though for some these went a bit too far with graphic violence. Most viewers' reviews encourage the rest to go into The Crow 2024 with an open mind and not expecting a remake of the 1994 movie (which, as explained above, it’s not), which they found made the viewing experience a lot more enjoyable.

The Crow 2024 Does Do One Thing Better Than The Original 1994 Movie
The 2024 remake of The Crow doesn't live up to the original, but there is one very specific thing it does better than the original movie from 1994.
The Crow's Fresh Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes Is Still Mixed
Even Though It’s Higher, It’s Still Not The Best
While its 65% grants it a “fresh” certificate, not all viewers had good things to say about The Crow.
Despite being higher than its critics’ score, The Crow 2024’s audience score is still mixed and not the best. While its 65% grants it a “fresh” certificate, not all viewers had good things to say about The Crow. Some viewers feel The Crow took too long to build the character of Eric/The Crow and weren’t sold on his love story with Shelly. The writing was also criticized by viewers, who found it awkward at times and even lazy, and some found that most of the flashbacks were unnecessary as they were never fleshed out.
The Crow 2024 was doomed to be divisive.
Other viewers called The Crow “unbalanced” due to how it spends most of its first half focused on Eric and Shelly’s story and then it suddenly goes into all the action and violence. Shelly’s backstory has divided viewers, as some liked how it was fleshed out and others felt The Crow could have used some of that time to explore Eric’s backstory.
Another divisive element is the ending, which some found to be heartbreaking and others didn’t like Eric’s sacrifice and how it left the door open for a sequel. The Crow 2024 was doomed to be divisive, and only time will tell if critics and general audiences will change their opinion on it.
