The trailer for season 2 of the critically acclaimed biographical drama series The Crown has been released online. Serving as an extension to series creator and writer Peter Morgan's work on the Oscar winning 2006 film The Queen, Mogan's production for Netflix follows the early life of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
The Crown is slated to run for six seasons - consisting of 10 one-hour episodes per season - with Claire Foy in the lead role as the young Queen Elizabeth II. Following the events previously depicted in season 1, which centered around Elizabeth's marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, up to the separation of her sister Princess Margaret from Peter Townsend in 1955, season 2 is all set to explore the Suez Crisis of 1956 and the ignominious retirement of the Queen's third Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, in 1963.

In addition to provide a sneak peek at footage from season 2 of The Crown, the teaser trailer above further confirms the premiere date for this new season: December 8. Offering a decided focus on Queen Elizabeth II's tenuous relationship with her lively husband Philip - as portrayed in the series by former Doctor Who lead actor, Matt Smith - the latest season of Morgan's historically minded drama series aims to be a thrilling continuation of its real-life story.
Forced to answer to the quick turnaround of three Prime Ministers under her rule - which will culminate with the Profumo affair and political scandal surrounding the departure of Harold Macmillan in the latest slate of episodes - The Crown is upping the ante in of social drama in season 2. Returning to reprise his role as Winston Churchill is John Lithgow, whose turn as the two-time Prime Minister won the show particular notice when it premiered last year.
By all s offered thus far, The Crown season 2 will see Morgan flexing his filmmaking muscles even further in his continued attempt to exhaustively detail the life of Queen Elizabeth II on the small screen. The show will incorporate even more historical figures into the mix this season too, with Matthew Goode (Allied) playing Anthony Armstrong-Jones - aka. Lord Snowdon, the photographer who was married to Princess Margaret for nearly two decades - and Jodi Balfour (Quarry) as the Jackie Kennedy to Michael C. Hall's JFK.
