Kathy Bates pokes her head through a door in the Matlock Reboot

CBS has the following new shows on tap for next season: Matlock, NCIS: Origins, Poppa's House, Watson, and an untitled Young Sheldon spinoff focusing on Mandy and Georgie. Both the new and returning shows highlight the current reliance on existing IP that's been seen across the bulk of networks and streaming services. Four of the five new shows are based on characters audiences are already familiar with, with Poppa's House standing on its own.

NCIS: Origins - Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know

Mark Harmon isn't done with the NCIS franchise yet, and the seasoned actor is returning for a prequel series all about Gibbs entitled NCIS: Origins.

It's a similar story with the returning shows, including The Equalizer, which comes after the original TV show and film series. Ghosts is based on the British show of the same name, and Elsbeth is the third series in The Good Wife universe. The continuation of the F.B.I. and NCIS franchises shows CBS's commitment to building out existing worlds they know audiences already enjoy. It's a tried and true strategy, particularly for CBS, and it's clear there are no plans to deviate from it for the time being.

The Equalizer airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
