CBS' remake of The Equalizer is quickly becoming one of the network's premiere primetime series, but will the Queen Latifah-led action adventure score a season 6? Loosely based on the eponymous series from the '80s, The Equalizer follows Robyn McCall, a woman living in New York City who uses the skills she acquired in her shady past to help out those in the neighborhood who have nowhere else to turn. Deftly mixing action and drama, Latifah's turn as The Equalizer humanizes the original concept, and the series has built a compelling narrative for Robyn across five seasons so far.

Comparisons to the Denzel Washington Equalizer film series were inevitable, but CBS' version beats the movies in several ways, including its backstory. Latifah's McCall is quippy and fun, and though there are serious topics, the show is somewhat more lighthearted than its predecessors. That's not to say drama is minimized, and season 5 sees Robyn's circle in jeopardy as the events of season 4 have caused them to want to give up the entire operation. Though the series will likely find equilibrium throughout season 5, there's still so much more to explore if CBS renews The Equalizer's sixth season.

A Comforting Update Even As CBS Cancels Other Shows

Though the series is still very much "on the bubble", the latest news confirms that negotiations are underway to get The Equalizer renewed. CBS' overcrowded slate has been thinned considerably with the recent cancelations of FBI: International, FBI: Most Wanted, and now S.W.A.T, but The Equalizer still has a chance to return for a sixth season. The Queen Latifah series is produced by Universal TV, and is not an in-house CBS product. This makes the show a bit more expensive, which could factor into its future.

The Equalizer Season 6 Is Not Confirmed

CBS Hasn't Ordered More Episodes Yet

Though The Equalizer has built plenty of momentum in its five seasons on the air thus far, it's not quite in the echelon of network series that are guaranteed renewals each year. As such, The Equalizer season 6 is not confirmed yet, and there's no telling when CBS will make its final decision. Season 4 was delayed by the Hollywood strikes of 2023, and didn't air until early in 2024. Nevertheless, that didn't dull the show's popularity, and it was eventually renewed for a fifth outing.

  • The Equalizer season 5 airs Sundays at 9:30pm EST on CBS.

With season 5 still so new, the continued success of the action drama series is still unknown, but it will likely follow trends seen in previous years. It's telling that CBS only renewed The Equalizer for a single season in 2024, because season 4 represented the last of a two-year renewal that came down after season 2. It could be that CBS is keen on sticking to single-season pickups for now, or it could indicate a bit of a decline for the series. Whatever happens, CBS will likely wait until the season is over before renewing or canceling The Equalizer.

The Equalizer season 5 debuted on October 20, 2024.

The Equalizer Season 6 Cast Details

Will Robyn & Her Team Return?

The ensemble cast of The Equalizer has been somewhat consistent since the beginning, and that isn't expected to change going into season 6. Leading the series since day one has been rapper-turned-actor Queen Latifah, and she'll be back on hand to reprise her role as the mysterious and protective Robyn McCall. Robyn's team was seemingly shaken up by the season 4 finale, but with several faces confirmed to return in season 5, it's assumed they'll be back in season 6 as well. Tory Kittles' Marcus Dante contemplated leaving NYC, but his return in season 5 likely means he'll be in season 6 too.

The same goes for Liza Lapira as Mel, and though she contemplated giving up the entire enterprise after her attempted kidnapping, she opted to stick by Robyn's side after all. Adam Goldberg should be back as Robyn's computer-savvy hacker, Harry, while Laya DeLeon Hayes will be back as Robyn's teen daughter, Delilah. Not to be forgotten, Robyn's Aunt Vi (played by Lorraine Toussaint) will also be back to offer her wise advice. The show employs a wide range of guest stars as well, but there's no telling who that will be until season 6 rolls around.

the show employs an ongoing narrative that will undoubtedly be very different by the time season 5 concludes

At this early juncture, it's impossible to guess what will happen in The Equalizer season 6. Though there are light procedural elements to the series, the show employs an ongoing narrative that will undoubtedly be very different by the time season 5 concludes. As previous season endings have shown, the series isn't afraid of throwing a few curveballs that could break up the team. The team is already on shaky ground going into season 5, and Dante's desire to leave NYC might not have been quenched for good.
