Jason Blum shares a seemingly major update on filming for Blumhouse Production's status of The Exorcist reboot shortly after Lidya Jewett reportedly ed the production.
In the tweet, Blum seemingly indicates the production has potentially wrapped filming. News of The Exorcist potentially wrapping comes as Blumhouse Production escalates progress on their next major project, their adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's, with Blum having shared images of the production in early February.
Everything We Know About The Exorcist Reboot
The Exorcist is currently the first chapter in a three-film story, with Green reuniting with Halloween and Halloween Kills writers Danny McBride and Scott Teems to resurrect the franchise 18 years after the last installment in the franchise, 2005's Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. The Exorcist reboot release date is slated for October 2023, with Green stating he hopes to create "an extraordinarily different film" when compared to his approach to the Halloween franchise. Like that trilogy, The Exorcist reboot is intended to act as a sequel to only the original 1973 film, creating a new continuity separate from prior installments.
Alongside Odom Jr., Jewett, and Burstyn, The Handmaid's Tale's Ann Dowd and Olivia Marcum were also cast in currently undisclosed roles. While filming seemingly wrapped in February, Burstyn reportedly filmed all of her scenes for the reboot in early 2022, with the actor alluding to her completing her part in an interview in June. While she had previously declined to play the role again for almost five decades, Burstyn's return as Chris MacNeil allowed her to use her impressive salary from the film to help fund a scholarship program for students on the master’s program at Pace University.
The Exorcist is the latest major horror franchise to make a return to the big screen, following in the footsteps of films including Halloween and Scream. With an emphasis on directly following the original film, the reboot hopes to strip the series to its core elements and recapture the shocking horror that terrified audiences and allowed the original film to stand out amidst other contemporary horror films of its day. And with Blum confirming production has wrapped and Green previously praising the cast's work, 2023's The Exorcist movie may become Blumhouse's next horror hit.
