Gustin confirmed he is not in The Flash, and the movie's director has provided an explanation for it.
The Flash director Andy Muschietti explained why Gustin does not have a cameo in the movie, saying that the Arrowverse actor and other DC TV characters were considered for roles in the film, but given the long list of potential cameos, The Flash's team "just had to pick," and Gustin was left out. That is a bold statement to be made when addressing the possibility of a cameo from an actor who has been the face of the movie's main character for a decade.
A Grant Gustin Cameo Should've Been A Priority For The Flash Movie
Muschietti's explanation for Gustin's absence from The Flash is disappointing. The Flash has received high early praise — including from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn — as a fantastic entry in the superhero genre, with recent reactions from early screenings of the movie claiming that The Flash has some exciting cameos from all over DC's live-action history. Given the wide scope of the movie's multiverse, Gustin not only had to cameo in The Flash, but the actor should have been a priority. While there were indeed many choices for cameos, few feel more justified.
The Flash movie has had a tumultuous road to finally releasing in theaters this June. The Miller-led solo film was announced in 2014, only a week after Gustin's The Flash series had premiered. While DC's movie side faltered, Gustin remained as the face of The Flash for the better part of a decade, and the movie not acknowledging that is a poor choice. The Flash should be, first and foremost, a celebration of the character, with the multiverse allowing Gustin and other actors from the hero's live-action history to appear.
Grant Gustin's Flash Legacy Is Secure, Even Without A Movie Cameo
While Gustin appearing in The Flash movie would have been a nice way of honoring all the actor has done for the character over the last decade, he does not need the movie cameo to cement his legacy as The Flash. Gustin first appeared as Barry Allen in 2013, with a two-episode arc in Arrow's season 2. Since then, the actor has saved the world in numerous Arrowverse crossovers, guest starred in multiple DC TV shows, and led The Flash's nine seasons to overwhelming for his portrayal. While Gustin is not in Miller's The Flash, the actor will always be Barry Allen.
