What's Next For The Purge Franchise?
This streaming success for The Forever Purge is just one more feather in the cap of the Purge movies. The franchise kicked off with a massive surprise hit when the original 2013 Purge earned $91.3 million against its scant $3 million budget. However, it is now the second-lowest-grossing movie in the franchise, just behind The Forever Purge. Check out a comparison of the Purge movies' worldwide grosses below:
Title |
Worldwide Box Office |
---|---|
The Purge (2013) |
$91.3 million |
The Purge: Anarchy (2014) |
$111.5 million |
The Purge: Election Year (2016) |
$118.5 million |
The First Purge (2018) |

The Forever Purge (2021) |

Although The Forever Purge represented a severe dip for the franchise, it was released into a pandemic-depressed box office landscape in mid-2021. Now that its success has been bolstered by streaming numbers, this may help justify the continuation of The Purge, which also includes a two-season television show that premiered in 2018. The Purge 6 is indeed in the works and had returning writer-director James DeMonaco attached for a script that would see returning character Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) in a worldwide Purge ten years after The Forever Purge, but not much progress has been seen on that project since.
While the next movie is still in development, Grillo recently described it as being on the "back burner" and no further details about the project have been revealed. It also remains to be seen if any of the Forever Purge cast, which includes Yellowstone's Josh Lucas and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Tenoch Huerta, returns to the franchise. However, that process may be reignited by this new online interest in the latest movie in the franchise.
