Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 5!
The Handmaid's Tale's final season, with June realizing that she has to take more drastic measures in the face of Gilead's increasing power if she ever wants to save Hannah. Because of this, June has decided that she once again must venture into the dangerous territory of Gilead, and the end of The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 5 means that Lawrence is her only hope of getting out.
The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 4 ended with a major setup, with June and Moira deciding that they must go back into Gilead. Mayday has a new plan to hurt Gilead, with them hoping to use Jezebel's to kill the Commanders that were involved with the plane takedown in season 5. June and Moira know that this would endanger the lives of the women working there, with them deciding to go into Jezebel's to warn them. Dressed as Marthas, June and Moira embark on this dangerous journey, although things quickly go horribly wrong.
Can Lawrence Get June & Moira Across The Border?
Commander Lawrence Could Fail
While at Jezebel's, June and Moira attempt to warn the women about the attack. The duo also tries to get Janine to leave with them, although she refuses to leave the other girls behind. Thus, June and Moira are leaving empty-handed. While there, a guard approaches them, forcing them to take their masks off. After recognizing that they are in trouble, June and Moira kill the guard. While they initially think about hiding the body, they know that his absence will eventually be recognized. This realization is correct, as the sirens go off, forcing them to make a mad dash out of Jezebel's.

Lawrence's Book & Quote Meaning In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 4 Explained
Commander Lawrence's book reading is a thematically important point in The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 4, and here's what it means.
June and Moira find themselves in a parking deck, with them realizing that they won't be able to escape. Luckily, they spot Commander Lawrence. June gets in front of Lawrence's car, forcing him to get out. She tells Lawrence that she and Moira need help getting out, and he begrudgingly tells the duo to get in the back of his car. The episode ends with Lawrence slamming the trunk shut as June begins to ask him to smuggle them across the border, leaving their fate ambiguous until The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 6 is released.
Commander Lawrence is a powerful figure, but the question of if he is powerful enough to smuggle two women out of Gilead still remains. Commander Lawrence has been known for taking actions against Gilead in the past, and he has made some powerful enemies. Thus, it is possible that someone would be suspicious of Lawrence going to the Gilead border. His car could end up getting searched, meaning that June and Moira would be found.
Can Lawrence Be Trusted & Is He Actually Helping Them?
Or Does He Have Different Plans?
Commander Lawrence is one of the most ambiguous characters in The Handmaid's Tale, with many viewers wondering if he can be trusted. Lawrence has been shown to help June and the other The Handmaid's Tale protagonists out in the past. He even got Janine sent to Jezebel's instead of the Colonies, possibly saving her life. However, Commander Lawrence has also committed some horrible acts, such as when he had the planes shot down in The Handmaid's Tale season 5. His leadership role means that he also helps perpetrate some of Gilead's most horrible crimes, even if he disagrees with them.
It seems that Lawrence truly isn't happy with the direction that Gilead is heading, although he probably isn't a fan of a place as liberal as the United States. Lawrence seems to have his own interests in mind, and his interests just so happen to align more with June than with Gilead. New Bethlehem seems to be Lawrence's main priority, and he would likely choose that over anything else. It is possible that Lawrence could even be taking June and Moira to New Bethlehem, knowing that it is less risky than taking them to the Gileadean border.
Is Mayday's Jezebel's Plan Now Ruined?
Thanks To June's Killing Of The Guard
Mayday's Jezebel's plan has been one of the main story arcs in the first half of The Handmaid's Tale season 6, and it could now be ruined. June and Moira's killing of the guard will undoubtedly draw a lot of attention to Jezbel's, meaning that security might be tightened. If they figure out that there was an intruder, it will be even more difficult to pull off the plan. Mayday's plans haven't worked out very well throughout The Handmaid's Tale, so it wouldn't be a shock for the group to fail again in The Handmaid's Tale's final season.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Theory: Luke Dies Saving Hannah From Gilead (I Used To Think It'd Be Nick)
I have always thought that Nick will die in The Handmaid's Tale, but all signs now point to Luke's tragic death at the end of season 6.
However, there is still a chance that it could work. So far, Janine is the only person on the inside who knows about Mayday's plan. It is doubtful that Janine will tell anyone, and while there is a dead body, it would be a stretch for Gilead to assume that it is part of a bigger conspiracy. Janine just has to stay quiet, and things could work. This development will definitely make Mayday's plan more difficult, but it isn't an impossible task yet.
Why Wharton & Serena Joy Are Getting Married
Is Their Marriage Based On Love?
Commander Wharton proposes to Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 5, and she makes the surprising choice to accept. This is puzzling for a few reasons. Firstly, Serena Joy was unhappy in her last marriage, and she is overall unhappy with Gilead. Getting married to Gilead's highest authority seems like a major setback. On top of that, Commander Wharton just began dating Serena, so jumping into a marriage seems a little fast.
However, both characters have motivation to get married. Serena Joy could see marrying Wharton as the safest option. Her past anti-Gilead activities and controversial position within the country puts a target on her back, but marrying a High Commander would mean that she is essentially untouchable. Meanwhile, Wharton could be using Serena Joy's influence, similarly to how Lawrence wants to use her for his New Bethlehem plan. They may actually love each other, but this The Handmaid's Tale relationship seems like a political marriage.
