Another reason the movie is so good is that the characters are varied, and they are relatable. Not every character is full of Christmas cheer, which is how it should be. Some of the people in the movie are selfish, and annoying, while others are full of life and love, which makes them far more likeable.

Jasper

Jasper The Holiday

There's no doubt that Jasper is the most unlikeable character within this movie, which is purely because of how he treats Iris. The two of them had a fling, but he then moves on and gets engaged, yet he keeps Iris hanging on by a thread, seemingly to just keep himself happy.

Even when he learns that Iris is spending some time away to try and help herself get over him, he cannot leave her alone. Sending her work and then appearing, he proves himself to be a horrible person who is manipulative and doesn't allow Iris to be herself or move on.

Ethan

Ethan

Ethan is only in the movie right at the start, and he is just as unlikeable as Jasper because all we learn about him is that he's a cheat. However, the fact he's in the movie less just means he is slightly better than Jasper, despite the fact he's still a sleazeball.

Clearly not happy that he's been caught out cheating, Ethan quickly spins things onto Amanda for not being an emotional person, and that only makes him more unlikeable. Rather than accepting the mistakes he's made and trying to fix them, he proves himself to be an emotionally manipulative person.

Maggie

Maggie TheHoliday

Just like Ethan and Jasper, Maggie is one of the characters that are in the movie to provide the heartbreak. She's an aspiring actress and someone who is dating Miles for the majority of the movie, but she ends up pretending she's away filming when in actual fact she's still in L.A. cheating on Miles with another man.

She does seem to be a slightly nicer person than the other two though, and Miles speaks positively of her when she's not around. However, in the end, she proves herself to be an unkind individual, who Miles is better off without.

Olivia/Hannah

Olivia/Hannah

Olivia and Hannah really are a two for one package. They are Graham's children from his wife, who es away and isn't part of the movie. Both of them are incredibly cute, polite, and well-mannered children, clearly being brought up in the right way.

They're also very funny and the way they bounce off each other and other characters leads to some great scenes. It's impossible to not like these sisters and they really do add a great amount of heart and love to the movie overall.

Arthur Abbott

Arthur and Iris arrive at his award ceremony in The Holiday

How can anyone not like Arthur? He's one of the most important characters in the movie and a real throwback to Hollywood of the past. Alone and on his own at Christmas, this former movie scriptwriter is an incredibly kind human, who is humble and knows exactly how to say the right thing.

His efforts to be able to walk during his award ceremony are amazing, and the dedication he puts into making sure that Iris is happy, and believes in herself really shows the kind heart that he has. He sees the relationship between Miles and Iris before they manage to see it, and that's all down to his experience of life, being able to see the best in people.

Graham Simpkins

Graham The Holiday

Graham is an incredibly intelligent, analytical, and kind person, and he's very likeable. As a widow, he has a huge responsibility to his two daughters, and the fact that he always puts them first is something that is really commendable of him.

He might be smart and great conversation, but he isn't shy about embarrassing himself either if it means being a great father. It's rare in movies to see a character be a single father and the way Graham gives his best to everything really does make him a hit with audiences. Being someone who can make others laugh, be kind and comionate all make him a great character, which is played brilliantly by Jude Law.

Miles Dumont

Miles at dinner on The Holiday

Jack Black is an excellent actor and he has an instant charisma that makes him really likable as a person. He brings all of that to this role, although he also tones things down as well and showcases an emotional side as well, especially with how he deals with his own romantic troubles.

But his best quality is just how kind he is. Miles puts everyone else before himself, whether that be Arthur or Iris, and that really allows him to be one of the best characters within the movie. He's full of joy and happiness, putting great energy into everything he does, which makes him so much fun to watch.

Amanda Woods

Amanda standing in the English countryside in The Holiday

Amanda is a hilarious character from The Holiday, spending her time in England after she finds out that Ethan is cheating on her. Her cosy idea of what the English countryside will be turns out to be very different in reality, but that only leads to some really funny moments.

She is taken massively out of her comfort zone, but the way she adapts and shes nothing but kindness and comion towards others is great. Amanda's life changes for the better and she becomes a far more positive person, with the growth in her confidence being a very likable thing to watch.

Iris Simpkins

Iris

Amanda is a brilliant character, but when it comes to likability, Irish just tips her. She's put through a serious emotional and difficult situation with Jasper, and she really does suffer some damage because of that. However, the way that she ploughs through and tries to stay positive is a really likeable trait.

Iris might be going on holiday to try and escape and cheer herself up, but even then she still tries to help people, with her work with Arthur. Her journey to finding happiness with Miles really does steer the movie, and that is something that makes her incredibly likeable.
